Nervous on vacation!!!! Help!!!

Recommended Posts

I'm on vacation with family and struggling. I've lost nearly 100 pounds since my surgery in June. Meals are costing way too much on this trip!! The touristy areas will not accommodate my dietary needs. The portions are big and expensive and there leftovers are going to waste!!! I think I may start packing my lunch and dinner before we head out for the day? Thanks, I needed to talk through that.

I know that many of us were taught to not waste food and of course we should try not to but sometimes it’s just not avoidable. If you can pack lunch and dinner and that works out better for you that’s great but give yourself permission to waste a little if it works better too. You are on vacation and you should be enjoying yourself. If there are not any smaller options available and you can’t share with Anyone else then just eat what you can and leave the rest. And remember, you aren’t really wasting money, You are investing in your health which will save you money in the long run. can you eat salad? A lot of times when I am out with another person who won’t eat their entire meal, I will just order a side salad and have a small piece of their Protein. Alot of times there are two sides and you can choose a side salad for one of them with a slight up charge. Then I will have a shake for a snack if I didn’t get enough protein that day. Just depends on how you tolerate lettuce. Or can you order a side of veggies and just have a bite or two off of your families plates? If not, just know that whatever you have to do it’s gets easier the further out you get. Try not to stress too much about it though. Enjoy yourself.

I always feel sad about wasting food whenever we go to a restaurant. Some of the restaurants over here have an option for "kids meal" which is usually half of the adult portion. I always order that whenever I go out with my family. It comes with a toy too 😂. Congratulation on loosing 100 lbs.

I feel that on so many levels. As a kid I was made to sit at the table for hours to finish my meal. I feel like it accidentally created this mind set that even when I'm full I needed to finish. My mom always got upset with me when my daughter was small that I didn't push her to eat all her meals. (my parenting is she will eat if she's hungry). We still split meals even now that she's 12, we like 99.9% of what eachother likes so it's a win win for the both of us, especially now after surgery. Wayyy less waste.

About 6 months after surgery I went on holiday to Europe. The hotel food was very carb based, fried or salads. I couldn't eat any at the time. The meat was tough and the fish overcooked. I really struggled to find foods I could eat. I ate yogurts and Soup. I bought deli meats to snack on in between. TBH It was great to get home to the foods I knew.

I was glad that I packed Jerky and crackers and cheese in my suitcase. I needed them. If you are on a budget, pre buy your foods if you can and snack on them. Then eat a small entree as a main course at the restaurant with family

YES! I think a lot of people on here can relate to wasting too much food. Partly because we still think we eat like we used to and partly because portions are just so damn big!

I try to share a meal, I have even just had a few bites of multiple peoples food too. Most places don't let adults order from the kids menu around me. Chipotle does, but it is still a lot of food and I end up wasting half or someone else eats it.

I also try to order something I know I will like as leftovers and take it for lunch the next day or 2.

I know this doesn't help while you are on vacation so I would say to try to share a meal with someone you are with.

Leftovers on vacation almost always go in the trash. (At least for me)

My aunt was telling me one day that she has seen signs some places that say no sharing. I haven’t seen them yet but I wonder why it matters to them. I was a waitress when I was in college and as long as someone left me a fair tip didn’t care how cheap they were (I’m assuming that’s why they think we are sharing is cause of money??). Anyways, we almost always share but I also bring a cooler with us so if we don’t want the same thing I can bring most things home. salad didn’t make it. It still got soggy but that could have been the cooler or just because it had alot of Water in it, not sure. This probably won’t help on vacation either. Then again if you were planning to pack a lunch and dinner, maybe you could just carry a cooler and take leftovers home for others to eat as a snack? .

Ah, I feel your pain. I'll be going to Disney with my daughter in December. It's already the land of tempting sweets, but I'm fine not having those. My daughter is a really mature 16 year old and said that she'll share food with me since I don't eat a lot and she wants to make sure I stay healthy.

Yes, I have seen on menus saying no sharing meals. I don't really know why either, I guess they want more money. haha

I always tip based on the cost of 2 meals though, I am a generous tipper anyway but I would basically add the cost of whatever the meal was, double it and tip based on that.

We are going to Florid/Disney next month with friends and my God daughter. I am not too worried about the foods, but my friends are thin and eat out all the time. So we shall see how it works out. I plan to stay as close to my normal diet as possible.

Good luck to us!

look at enjoying appetizers or side salads - some places will also allow people kids meals! or look at the a la carte options; instead of a meal a meat and one side or just a side may suit you.

most importantly enjoy yourself!!!!

You can search menus for the park before you go so you know which restaurants have the more nutritious options. I read that you can substitute fruit for fries in most places in the park and of course you can ask them to cook your entree without butter. Then the obvious of eating without the bread and limiting the sauces, etc. In cases like that I usually just splurge a little on the meal and then eat veggies for my snack to sorta balance it out. You could also carry a Fanny pack (I decided they are acceptable fashion for a place like disney) with a Protein Shake and you can get a glass of ice anywhere. In October it depends on the day but it could be so hot you will be glad to not have a big meal weighing you down.

Pretty much my plan! I am really not too worried even if I splurge a little I just don't want to be sick. haha

My first long vacation since surgery, I am looking forward to it!

Hey. Maybe you should also bring some of those small packs of nuts to get some salt in since you may be sweating it all out.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
