Liquid pre-op diet???? Who knew?????

Recommended Posts

I was just banded last monday, dec. 10. My name is Deb, and I'll be posting frequently from now on. I was only informed of lapbandtalk.com the day I came home, and have been reading and reading since then.

My concern is, I was never told about any kind of liquid pre-op diet. My doctor never said a word, and it was not in his literature. I ate up until the day before. I hope I didn't ruin my chances of success now! Yes, I do have a fatty liver, I am diabetic, and quite overweight (285lb).

The surgery was done laparascopically, but it lasted 4 hours because of problems he found. It was harder than I thought. Today is day 6 post-op, and am feeling much better, finally. I have lost quite a bit of weight already, and am staying on liquids now.

What do you all think? Is the pre-op diet really that important?? Deb

My doctor did not require a pre op diet. DIfferent doctors have different recommendations. My Doctor is very liberal about diet restrictions. Best to do what your Doctor recommends. You have to have faith!

My doctor has me on the liquid diet. But he is the same doctor that did my mother and my sister 3 years ago, and when i told my mom about the 2 week diet, she is like hmm, we didnt have to do that, must be new.

They are doing great on their lapbands after 3 years and didnt have the preop diet, so you will be fine too. The diet helps the surgery go a bit easier, but since you are past that point, you should be fine :)

My Dr. asked me to do the liquid diet a week before the surgery. He told me that it would make his job easier because it would remove any pressure around the liver. He said that not everyone did it, but if I did, he would have an easier time. In the end, I did the morning and afternoon liquids, but had already scheduled "Last Suppers" with friends and family. He had no problems whatsoever in what I did. Talk to your Dr.

Good luck on your Journey!!!

Chris :clap2:

Deb, dont worry...a lot of dr's dont require that...

also, you can go to the month you were banded in, (dec, like me, :)) on this forum and pop in there to see where people are at who's been banded the same month you are...

good luck

I don't believe the pre-op diet will have any effect on how you lose weight post-op. The pre-op diet is generally to reduce the size of your liver so there is fewer chances of complications during surgery. As others have said, not all doctors require this of their patients, so I would not worry about it. The post-op diet is what is most important for you now. I am sure you will do well.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
