Made myself feel awful.. old habits die hard

Recommended Posts

No matter that I’m suffering from a whole load of symptoms, I just had ice cream and chocolate. Why? How can someone put themselves through so much pain and surgery etc and then just self sabotage?
My mind won’t heal overnight I know. Right now my stomach feels like I have gastric flu. I’m waiting for the inevitable.
Punishing myself.
I know I’m not alone. I just hope I’ll cure myself of these habits soon.
Anyone else like me? I’m not even a month post surgery yet.

Sorry you are going through this.

I haven't had any issues with eating sweets after my surgery. But, I am just like you. Mine were before surgery so many years ago when I all of sudden had a milk allergy. That meant no dairy for me. No pizza, no ice cream. I did the exact same thing you did I went ahead and ate some ice cream and I paid for it with some of the worse stomach pain I have ever had and it took my stupid self a couple of times of doing this before I learned my lesson. Even the pain I had after surgery is nothing compared to that.

Your going to get through this and your going to remember this. Best advice I can give is just pick yourself up and keep moving forward.

Unless you ate the ice cream and chocolate to purposely harm yourself, or harm your surgery (and thereby yourself) then this was NOT self-sabotage. It was giving in to an old habit. It was a mistake. Oops.

This mistake, unfortunately (or fortunately, if you take my outlook) caused you some discomfort. This is a teaching moment, and it appears you are learning the lesson. Unfortunately, it may take learning this lesson more than once. No matter how many times you must learn this lesson, it is still not self-sabotage.

You put yourself through surgery so that your body and your mind can work together. Now your body is telling you in no uncertain terms that this is not something you want to do.

Hopefully will will learn and grow through the experience.

Good luck,

Tek

I had a mini chocolate ice cream lolly tonight. Cals 144. My sky didn't fail in. It was just enough to satisfy my craving and small enough to not make me nauseous

I won’t add to what the others have said. As you know you didn’t make the best decision & you know it was because your head cravings were too strong. And you are likely emotional & stressed post surgery & you were seeking something that always comforted you. You aren’t the only one to experience this.

The head battles are the hardest part of this process. It’s why many seek the support of a therapist & swear by them to help them navigate these battles. Reach out to your medical team for a reference. Better to start working on the head stuff sooner than later.

What you are experiencing may be your first dumping too which is more common with bypass. Never pleasant & experiencing it is often enough for you to avoid high sugar/high fat foods in the future.

Be careful & take care of yourself.

I agree that it’s not really self sabotage unless you actually intended to harm or sabotage yourself. Don’t beat yourself up, Just try to learn from your mistake and do better today. Have you tried searching for a sugar free or no sugar added alternative? I have found Many sugar free or no sugar added options out there that honestly don’t taste bad.

I had sleeve so I don’t have issues with sugar, but I found Yasso Greek yogurt bars that are only 100 calories and satisfy my sweet cravings. They do have some sugar 13g total and 9g added sugars? I am pretty sure that’s quite a bit LESS than regular ice cream though. I don’t have any ice cream to compare it to.

Okay I just searched Walmart real quick and it is less than regular ice cream but Klondike makes no sugar added desert bars that have even less. 6g of sugar per bar (11g of sugar alcohol. I’m not sure how that plays into it). Also, Bryers makes no sugar added with 5g sugar and 10g sugar alcohol (salted caramel flavor). I personally like the idea of the bars cause it’s already portioned out for us.

Most but Not all products have the nutrition info online so a little research and hopefully you can find an option that will work for you. If you live near a Publix I have found that they tend to carry a wider variety and have more of the healthier options (compared to walmart). Trader Joe’s and Aldi are supposed to be good for healthy options too but I don’t have either of those

I am, of course, not advocating that you eat ice cream this early out but i will admit that I tried a few treats just to see if I could eat them once I got to regular food such as chocolate, pizza and Pasta. For me it was a mindset thing. Once I knew I could tolerate them in small amounts and eventually have them later it was that much easier to do without them until maintenance. Everyone is different though. All we can do is what we think is best for us. I hope this helps

Before sugery I was a massive sugar addict. Then, when I was 3 weeks post-op I ate ice cream. Against the advice of my surgeon. I paid the price for that (cold sweats, racing heart, violent vomiting). Even though all that happened, I still craved ice cream and ate it again the next day. Afterward, I reflected on what I had done and I felt so ashamed and mortified with myself. But the bad feelings only made me want to comfort myself with more sugary foods.

On the third day, something changed in me. I decided to just forgive myself for those 2 mistakes and move on like it was no big deal and consider it part of the learning curve. I threw all the remaining ice cream down the kitchen sink.

I am now 7 weeks post-op and my sugar cravings have all but gradually faded. I decided that I will allow myself to have a small portion at the 3 months mark. But the way I am feeling now, I doubt I will do that.

Forgive yourself for your mistakes. You are still unlearning a lifetime of habits and addiction and it will take some time to get the hang of it. Head addictions are powerful beasts. As long as you make the decision to try and march in the general right direction you will get there eventually.

Nice--I am almost 9 years out -- I haven't had a coke.dr pepper/7 UP/rootbeer since Dec of 2014. About 2 or so years after, went to a football game and was craving a coke. Hubby had one--so I took a very teeny tiny sip---YUCK!!! So syrupy!!

Also have not drank a diet coke/dr pepper/7up, etc since prior to surgery. That sweetener isn't any better!!

That is honestly one thing I do NOT regret not having anymore. AND--I'm a high school school teacher--anyone else that is one knows we often have donuts in the lounge- All I have to do is open the box and sniff---that's honestly enough for me~!

Life changes is what this is all about!! MUCH BETTER than where I was prior to surgery!!

I understand how you feel. I still crave the sweets (which as always been my downfall). I still feel 250lbs until I look in the mirror. However, the last time I ate too many sweets, it felt as if a bolt of lightening hit my heart and pain radiated through my arms to my neck & jaw. The dr said it was indigestion. Whatever the hell it was, I haven’t eaten the same amount of sweet foods again. But it’s a daily decision not to feel like crap on the verge of death! It’s the only thing that has stopped me.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
