What if I can't lose weight pre surgery?

Recommended Posts

What if I can't lose weight before the surgery? To lose 10% of my weight, I need to shed 25 lbs. That's a lot and could take 6 months. Has that happened to anyone?

i wasnt given a specific amount to loose. Just simply to follow the pre op diet for my specified time of 2 weeks which i lost 11lb during that time. How long is your pre op diet?

If you can't lose weight, it's up to your doctor. I would ask him/her. Some may refuse to do the surgery, while others don't care and are aware how difficult it is for some to lose weight but they give you a goal to work with so you can begin practicing good habits and discipline. For example, if you eat the wrong things after surgery before healing occurs, you can hurt yourself, hence some discipline is needed. Good luck. I wish you a great and successful journey!

I was told to lose 10lbs but I didn’t lose it until my pre-op liquid diet. I actually lost 15lbs in two weeks

I'm still waiting to hear from the surgeon to schedule an appointment. But I'm wanting to get all of my questions written down so I'll be ready when he does schedule.

I got it in my head that they required you to lose 10%. Guess that's not true, thank God.

I’m not sure. Each surgeon may have their own requirements I just had my surgery a week ago on the 27th

I wasn’t required to lose a certain amount either. Some people are depending on the doctor and their unique case. Higher BMI may be required to lose to make the surgery safer.

My insurance set parameters for me. Had to see a dietician once a month and not go over my first appt weight. I lost 12 lbs during that time.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
