My surgeon told me that the sleeve was the only one that was permanent, the bypass was reversible which was interesting. for me since i am paying out of pocket, Both are permanent because i dont have another 20 grand to spend on getting something reversed lol

I agree. I don't want to think of this as reversible because I did get it to be healthier as I am overweight, pre diabetic and with upper airway restriction syndrome. I just want to know that if I'm not thriving and all interventions made, that it could potentially be reversed.

technically speaking... Gastric bypass is reversible, Gastric sleeve is not. But i hope you find out what is the problem soon! keep us updated so you can get thru and reach your goal weight.

I hope it doesn't come to that. I'm worried that if all interventions are tried and I'm not thriving, that they still won't consider it at all. I guess I'm just scared.

Are you on a PPI? Excess acid could be making you nauseous. It could be many things. You should contact your bariatric team. They might admit you for fluids, nutrition and testing.

I really hope you get answers and feel better soon! 🤗

Thank you! I am on a PPI, twice a day! I'm so confused and so were the doctors in the ER.

Lol, I'm from Ontario, so OHIP paid for my surgery. I had to go through a lot of tests and of course evaluations to be considered for the surgery. I don't want it reversed if I can get this fixed but I want to know that it's an option if I'm not thriving.

My concern is what doctor would do it? Would I waste away before an intervention is considered. I read that a reversal is only done only after someone is close to dying. I don't want to wait years to get to that point if nothing is helping I'm sorry I'm so negative. I'm just scared.

I was just reading about another RNY patient that is 11 weeks post op and still experiencing nausea. You might want to read what they said or even inbox them for advice.

Your Multi Vitamins can make you nauseous too. Calcium, Iron & Vitamins A, C, D, E & K can all cause nausea.

Check to ensure you’re not doubling up on dosages like taking a separate iron &/or calcium tablets as well as multi vitamins with iron & calcium. Try splitting the dose across the day e.g. one in the morning & one at night. Take them after you finish your shake so you have something on your tummy. Try a different brand. Try a patch to avoid them entering your tummy.

I was slightly nauseous most mornings from my vitamins. Sometimes bad enough to vomit & sometimes I just needed to lie a down for a little while. I was allowed to stop taking them once I reached goal as my blood work showed I had more than enough of all the vitamins & minerals I needed. I was never nauseated again.

Some people develop a lactose intolerance or sensitivity after surgery (most just temporary) which can cause nausea. Try a lactose free shake & dairy products.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I can barely drink one Protein Shake a day. It hurts to even drink Water. I vomit if I try anything else like sugar free Jello, pudding, ice pops, etc. Im so frustrated that I'm regretting getting this surgery. I'm glad I'm not the only one but also scared that this could potentially last longer than Im mentally prepared for. I'm hoping for the best for everyone that is having the same issues. There's nowhere to go but to keep moving forward and to pray that it will get better.

I know this will not make you feel any better I am almost 4 years postop Roux n y and I buy three bottles meclizine at a time on Amazon.
Some days I have to take anywhere from 2 to 8 a day.
I want to a gastrologist a couple weeks ago because after this like the time I don’t trust my surgeon anymore.
I had a barium swallow test earlier this week and on Wednesday I’m having an EKG.
I actually threw up in the garbage can while I was talking to the new Gastrologist!

Sometimes it’s just something we have to live with because of what we have done to our bodies even though I do not regret this decision one bit!

it can, but they usually don't do it except in serious medical situations that can't be resolved otherwise.

Hi--that was me. I am still struggling. Doc had said that the longest he had seen anyone was 7 months. So I am trying different things, with little regard for the doc.

(ATTENTION-I am trying different things--DON'T do what I do, JUST because I say it!!) That said-- the doc has me on 4 mg ondansetron once a day, the melt in your mouth pill. Nasty, but better for me than the patch. I have taken it twice a day, as the internet says you can without poisoning yourself. He added Promethazine 25 mg twice a day (same stuff as Phenergan) first as a suppository 🙄, and when I said nope nope, he gave me a pill. Ok-when I looked it up, surprise-it can be taken every 4 to 6 hours. Now because I do not REALLY want to poison myself ( I promise) the internet mentioned 12.5 mg dosage (or breaking one in half.) Now that really seems to help. Often a doc will give you the lowest possible dose, and you will suffer, until you get through the myriad layers of contacts before you can notify your doc that "this ain't working."

Another thing-I seem to be swallowing air-without a straw, with a straw, small sip, whatever... So burping seems to help. Little burps, but burps. (Takes the pressure off--maybe?) I haven't found a 100% answer yet. But I do know this: there are a ton of anti-nausea meds out there. One ought to do it--if not, I am going to make the doc so tired of hearing from me, he will buckle down and see about me. He might want to get you in there to scope you...I anticipate this myself, if we can't come to some sort of agreement/answer. I still can't drink Protein Drinks. Doc says it is the same hormones that cause "morning sickness," (with a smile) which I am rapidly beginning to find that answer condescending.

Like I said--I am not a doctor, don't do what I have done, just because I said I did it. I am telling MY journey.

Sorry you’re having such a rough time. Your body has gone through a tremendous shock. It is still healing & trying to figure out what to do. I remember crying at 3 or 4 weeks out thinking “what have I done?” I was so terribly weak.

Try a different brand of Protein Drink. Add the unflavored powder to everything. As you are able to add more foods in you probably will start to feel better.
Check to see if your insurance plan has a dietitian you can speak with. Cigna provided one for me. We talked weekly the 1st 2 months & them monthly till about 8 months out. She was really helpful.

Yes, my Multivitamin makes me nauseous, but I've found that taking it after eating a high fat meal helps tremendously.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
