Should I even try

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am currently 4 months out and have done this surgery because I was told I was too big to get pregnant.... I was 420 now 345 when do you think my husband and I could/should start trying. My doctor said not at all which I am confused about because he knew that was the main reason for me to lose weight!

They may mean to wait until you are closer to or at goal so not while you’re losing. Pregnancy does put a lot of stress on your body & many put on a lot of weight too. Maybe your surgeon thinks you’re still not healthy enough yet. Worth asking them for their reasoning behind the advice.

a lot of surgeons recommend you wait a year after surgery for the reasons Arabesque mentioned.

agree, most surgeons say a year at least

I am surprised this wasn't brought up during any of your pre-Op appointments since most bariatric programs strictly recommend not getting pregnant at least until a year or two post-Op.

My program recommends no pregnancy until 18 months out and they make sure patients are on double control protection if sexually active.

Like everybody else said, a year is usually the benchmark and as you as closer to goal.

At 345 you would be a super high risk OB patient. You don't want that. It might put you on bed rest early in the pregnancy or preeclampsia. Or any other of the many possible complications.

You want to be as close to a normal BMI as possible, to lessen complications to you and your baby. I agree with the others that said to wait. This is a conversation you should have with your surgeon.

I agree with the above posters. You will want to be as healthy as possible to raise the wonderful children you will have. Also, congratulations on your current weight loss!

My practice is very clear that pregnancy should be avoided for 18 months. Did you ask the surgeon what timing they prefer? My recommendation would be to ask them what they recommend in terms of a waiting period.

I strongly suggest waiting until the 18 month mark before even trying to get pregnant. Its great that you have lost weight so far, but once you are pregnant your weight loss will be put on hold and chances are you will never get back on track. The first 12-24 months are the prime time for losing weight with these surgeries and trying to grow a life inside you is draining!

Unfortunately, I know this first hand. I had a lap band placed in August 2017 and delivered my first child in January 2019. He was basically conceived around the 9 month mark. I don't recommend it.

Ohhh I know how you feel, I have baby fever too!! It’s so hard having to wait when you already feel so much better, top that with seeing cute kiddos everywhere..
I was told 18 months as well and am counting down. 12 months to go 🥰

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
