Upcoming Surgery Advice

Recommended Posts

Hello, I’m new here so I hope this post is ok.

I am a 47 year old man in the UK who went from being a 10 stone fit guy in my 20s to being 23 stone now. Tried diet after diet and yo-yo’d so much I went dizzy!

I am paying privately for a gastric sleeve in January 2022 and my partner seems to have more concern than me.

I feel I have done plenty of research but the two questions my partner keeps asking are:

1) will you ever be able to have more than a couple of drinks of alcohol (wine) in future

2) will you ever be able to go for a nice meal again (not just diet food)

we are a social couple and like to enjoy nights out but my biggest concern is I want to be healthy and look healthy so not drinking alcohol at all for a while and small meals isn’t a problem. We are both just wondering what happens say 12 months down the line could I potentially be able to eat a normal meal (normal portions not trailer loads like now) and perhaps enjoy a few drinks on a night out?

Thank you all in advance.

You can drink alcohol again without a problem. Maybe not right away, but I am 3 months post op and drink alcohol when I want to without limits. As far as normal meals out, I go out to dinner a couple times a month. I do not get an appetizer like I did in the past because I will not be able to eat the main course. I usually just order the main and I am able to eat that. If you go to places that load on the food you won't finish, but many normal eating people cannot finish big giant portions either. I can eat most of a 6 ounce filet mignon and some of the veggies....or a piece of fish and veggies. I think you are going to be ok with what you can eat and drink.

Thanks Tony, that makes Me feel a lot more confident. The whole idea of this is to bring my confidence back, look and feel better and reduce what I eat so your response is perfect.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to ply to me.

Everyone is different, but for me the answers to both questions are a resounding YES.

I can eat whatever (except excess sugar), but not at “normal” portions. If i had to guess, I probably eat about 1/3 of what an “normal” heathly, similar-sized person eats in VOLUME. But calorie-wise, its almost the same (i eat about 1800-2000 cals a day on average these days). And yeah, its not all diet food (as i sit here with espresso martini in hand and a small container of cashews i plan to eat after i drink this).

I go out to eat at least once a week (more, pre-pandemic, as well as during summer with outdoor dining) and order what i want...especially now that i dont avoid carbs like the plague anymore, lol. I always have take home leftovers if my companions did not already eat my leftovers. I also drink regularly (mostly red wine or vodka with Kahlua or Clamato)

You may be able to do the same, or you may not. This is something you will find out through trial and error.

P.S. i was going to restaurants/parties with food at 3 post-op Granted, I barely ate anything (if at all!) those early days, but it was just about the company for me anyways.

P.P.S. I am a little over 3 years out and have been maintaining below goal weight for 2.5 years. I’m 5’2” 116.5 lbs this morning. Im relatively active.

Good Luck! ❤️

thank you so much for taking Time to reply to me, I find this very reassuring. My hope is that I don’t want to eat so much after the operation and it sounds like I won’t be so hungry anyway which is good. I just want to still be able to enjoy life but looking and feeling better.

thank you.

I am 8 months out and I can eat everything in smaller portions I did pre surgery. I still have 11 pounds to goal so I don’t eat the junk anymore but I admit I did try it just to make sure I could tolerate it in moderation when I do get to maintenance. As far as drinking I used to drink rum and Cole zero which I cant have anymore so I tried it with crystal light and it’s just awful. I can’t drink it fast enough to even get a little buzz. It’s just not worth it to me to have that amount of liquid calories so I just don’t drink anymore. But if you like wine or other non fIzzy options you should be fine.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. All this information is really making me feel more confident. I hope that after the surgery my food cravings will ease and I won’t be so bothered about big meals anyway.

For most people the cravings and hunger hormones are gone. For me, at least I do not have craving for large portions at all anymore. I do crave things but it’s head hunger and it’s from boredom or emotions. These are pretty easy to identify because you crave something specific, usually something that you shouldn’t have. But yes, post surgery you should be just as satisfied with a smaller meal.

I'm still early on (just 4 months out) but honestly I see large portions and there is no longing for them, at all. Actually, quite the opposite. Granted this may change over time but it has been liberating. I hope this sticks around!

Yes and yes. I am a bit over a year out and I can (and do) drink, and I greatly enjoy going out to eat. I just drink wine and beer, and I can’t drink the amount I used to, but I shouldn’t anyway because I’m less than half the woman I used to be.

I don’t eat “diet” food when I’m going out to eat, but I also do try to be conscious of what I’m ordering. My hedonistic days of ordering and finishing a huge plate of food followed up with dessert are over, but that’s for the better. I have a great time going out to eat, and I love trying new breweries and new wines still. Life isn’t over post sleeve I promise. 😊

Great questions! Although I do not drink, it is definitely possible to eat at a restaurant again. I try to view the menu online before I go, to save time and have a plan so I’m not studying at the table. I do eat mostly healthy foods at restaurants, and usually have leftovers. It’s socializing that is the most fun, so all good!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
