How did you figure out if you had dumping syndrome?

Recommended Posts

Just that question 😂

Did you purposely try something sugary or high carbs/fats to find out? Or just happened by chance?

I don't dump (only about 30% of us do), but I'm not sure I'd push the envelope like that to find out. It's evidently pretty awful. If you're a dumper, you'll find out eventually - but I wouldn't want to purposely try to set it off.

I don't believe I have ever truly dumped and I'm almost one year out. I may have had a mild episode based on symptoms, but what I ate really didn't fit the bill. That being said, I've had many episodes of eating too much/too fast/not chewing well enough. Many people confuse the two.

I don't want to have the experience in general. But when I eat out, I'm very, very careful to limit quantity and not try items for the very first time.

When i was about 2 months out I had a couple sips of a soju-sake (sugary alcoholic drink) thinking it was just a couple sips and it was xmas, so what’s the harm?

Anyhoo, about 10 mins later my heart started racing, and i started to feel tired. A few mins after that i got nauseated and had to poop (not the explosive, didnt make it to washroom kind, but urgent and loose nonetheless). Then i was exhausted and had to go to sleep.

Figured it was dumping.

About a month later i had 2-3 tablespoons of a VERY sugary, creamy fruit salad. This time it was like death. I had “material “ coming out BOTH ends, lol. Mr literally picked me up off the bathroom floor and carried up the stairs to put me in bed and i slept it off for a few hours.

KNEW it was dumping.

Sugar does not affect me as badly/quickly now (am 3 years out). But i still have to watch it. I can lessen the effects if i eat small amounts, ensure that i don’t eat excess sugar on am empty stomach, and try not to mix dairy and excess sugar at the same time.

Case in point: yesterday i didn’t want to eat dinner (i made stir fry noodles for the fam and I don’t really eat noodles). I did end up eating 3 sour key candies later while watching tv (yeah i know that was dumb). Anyhoo, i got the heart racing, the onset of exhaustion and a mild death feeling and ended up going to bed super early. No poop or barf issues, but still unpleasant.

P.S. Im a sleeve.

Do you also get exhaustion after an episode of foamies? I do. If it happens, I'm done.

Not usually, but sometimes. And never to the degree of exhaustion from dumping.

I surmised that I probably wouldn't have dumping problems after I began eating red grapes as Snacks and having no physical issues. However, I have had a few rare instances where I've eaten something a bit sugary and within minutes experienced nausea and cramping, which didn't let up for a couple of hours. But that's nothing compared to what I've heard others describe. When it does happen to me, it's uncomfortable... and totally unpredictable.

I got dumping in the lesser degree no mad rush to the toilet or cramping. I thought i was having panic attacks until my surgeon said nope its dumping no more shakes for you . He said it might improve once i went to solids which it did but i havent been game to have shakes or smoothies again

thats what i want to know. Today i had a cup of chicken Soup, and ate too fast, had chest pain, and threw it up. Im gonna be 6 weeks post op, had RNY and the most structure food ive eaten is just chicken soup and 1egg. That pain in my chest, thats not dumping correct? Im still doing yogurt and Protein Drinks daily. im terrified of solid food and feel "safe " this way. Oh, and im loosing hair, started at 3 weeks post op

I dont think that was dumping, you just ate to much to fast and made yourself vomit. You need to slowly move to solids. 3 weeks is early to have Hair loss are you taking Vitamins etc?

If you were dumping, the vomiting would not give you releif. I read somewhere (was it this thread?) someone describing it kinda like an anxiety attack. Which sounds about right for my experience. Like a really bad, anxiety-ridden hangover…sprinkled with barf and diarrhea.

This sounds more like the foamies. Did it sort of bubble up (regurgitate) with saliva? With dumping you may feel bloated, too full or nauseated. You may vomit &/or have diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, flushing, dizziness, cold sweats, lightheadedness & a rapid heart rate.

no, nothing like that. Just a feeling of "stuck" in throat and bad pain under ribcage thats sqeezes and the only relief is to throw up.

not dumping. Dumping involves chills, shakes, racing heartbeat. Sometimes nausea and/or vomiting, but that's not the "main event"

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
