No matter if taken after meals, vitamins make me NAUSEATED!

Recommended Posts

I don’t know if it is just the Vitamin I take or what, and I had vitamin intolerance BEFORE my sleeve, but I am literally having to MAKE myself take these. I TAKE THE Bariatric Advantage soft chews. They taste fine, but damn! Do you guys have any advice? I have actually skipped a few days of Vitamins because I would like to NOT feel sick!

thanks for any suggestions. Again, I do eat first.

Susan

I had the same issue. I now use the Patch MD Multivitamin patch. Just had bloodwork and the only thing that was slightly low was my Iron. I ordered straight off their website.

just so you know, these work well for some people, but not for others. Some surgeons discourage them because of the mixed results. I've never tried them because I was afraid I'd be one of those for whom they didn't work, but they do work fine for some people.

Well the other option is constant sickness, so I might as well try. I have emailed my surgeon to ask about it. Thanks for the heads-up!

That was my feeling. I would always get a bit nauseous with Vitamins and surgery made it worse. It was either try the patch or not take them. Luckily, my bloodwork shows they are working for me, as several of my levels are up, even with the low calorie intake.

There is the Bariatric Advantage capsule. Its just one pill a day. Their chewables at times made me feel sick but I've never gotten sick with the capsules. I've worried about the vitamin patches as it takes months before you will have Vitamin deficiencies show up. So I've not wanted to take any chances. So maybe try the once a day capsule first?

My doc wouldn't let me use the patch. I had to take nausea pills and still try to take the Vitamins. I literally stopped taking them and didn't start back up until almost my 5th month out. Now I can tolerate them just fine.

My dr recommended the patch because I was having trouble with the pills. Maybe the thinking is something is better than nothing at this point. 🤷‍♀️Might try again in a few months. May still have an issue due to prior history before surgery.

I was thinking that as well. Even if the OP is one whom the patch doesn't really work well for, some absorption is better than none..

Multi Vitamins always made me nauseous even when I took them before I had surgery. My surgeon suggested trying different brands to find one that didn’t but this can be an expensive option.

I found taking one in the morning & one at night helped a little. Make sure you have something solid in your tummy, not just a Protein Shake, before you take them.

My blood work has been good all along the way. I think I just absorb the nutrients I need well. (Maybe I’m an abzorbaloff - Dr Who reference.) I remember my dietician saying if you already had enough of a certain Vitamin having extra could make you nauseous but I can’t remember which one sorry. Sort of think it was one of the B Vitamins but don’t quote me. She told me that when I’d stopped taking vitamins (with my surgeon’s approval) when I had been in maintenance for two months.

I think you're right about the B vitamins. I know thiamine (B1) tastes awful - and I think it nauseates some people, too

I wonder if using the Patches will cause less Constipation from Calcium and Iron? That’s the issue I have. Have to take Fiber everyday forever it seems and never had issues before all these Vitamins.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
