I am almost 6 months out from my sleeve surgery. I’m down 76lbs!! You are pre-warned, this is a thread on poop and poop problems, lol.
I am having bowel movements (BM) every 3 days on average sometimes 2 days or 5-6 days. They’re hard BM too. I am taking stool softener every night, minimum 64 ounces of Water daily, 8tsp of Fiber daily in the water, pro/pre biotic daily. I don’t know what to do differently/add/subtract.
Im terrified of laxatives because I don’t want to start them and not be able to go without them.
Any recommendations or advice based on your experience? 😁

chronic Constipation is a pretty common problem with both RNYers and VSGers. Different treatments work for different people. I have a capful of Miralax in my Protein Shake every morning. That usually prevents it - although I occasionally still get backed up, maybe once a month. When that happens, a night or two of Milk of Magnesia does the trick.

I don’t take Fiber supplements because I find they back me up. I do drink Smooth Move tea most nights, and take a senna tablet on the nights I don’t. Since WLS, I find not going for more than two days is radically uncomfortable for me. The times I miss my tea or tablet typically results in days of misery getting back on track. I go most mornings with my tea or tablet and I am a happy pooper! 💩😬

For the 1st 4-5 months I was having very loose stool and going to the bathroom like 6 times a day. Now I am almost 9 months out and am extremely constipated. My doc told me to take miralax every single day, and also 3 stool softeners at night before bed. I have been doing this for a week and although my poop is coming out, I still have to strain really hard. This has given me hemorrhoids, and I have to take at least 2 sitz baths a day. It is very painful. I tried to take Metamucil but it gave me massive cramps. I drink 1/2 gallon of Water a day, eat a lot of veggies, fruit, etc. but it doesn't do anything. Doc says its because of all the Protein and Vitamins with Iron. Hopefully it gets better. There are days where I can't even sit down because it hurts so bad.

yes - that's exactly what it is - the high Protein diet + Calcium + Iron. All of those are known to back people up...

I had no idea about the Calcium backing me up also?

yep - it does. calcium citrate isn't as bad at this as Calcium carbonate is, but it can still cause it. However, dealing with the Constipation is better than developing osteoporosis, so we're kind of stuck dealing with it (constipation, that is!)

Thank you!! I think I may have just developed one from this problem. Any recommendations besides the sitz bath?

Thank you all!! I think I’m going to start doing Miralax every night to be more regular. Hoping that fixes the problem. Does the miralax make the BM softer too?

It is totally safe to take softeners with miralax. I would start with both and see how it goes. Also, Miralax doesn’t work for everyone. Be open to trying different stuff until you find the mix that works for you. Hope it all works out! 😂💩

Till date I have no problem passing stool, in a matter of fact I drink a full mug of warm Water every day morning one hour before Breakfast, that helps me to visit the the toilet once a day, I eat more vegetables regularly, almost 90% of my meals, beside having exercise also helps my bowel to relax and function properly.

This is my experience [emoji3059]

I use the creams and wipes by Preparation H. They help a little bit, but the sitz baths help a lot. I prefer the Water to be as hot as I can tolerate it. My doc says that the warm/hot water helps to increase the blood flow to the colon because it naturally doesn't have any.

I would double check with your doctor before doing this every day. I only do it every day because he told me to. The Miralax helps you go and the stool softeners make it softer/easier to come out.

Healthy Life Style, any updates? Usually no news is good news. I’m 10 months out and super struggle with Constipation and anal fissures. I take one capful of miralax nightly and that has helped but if I slack on my Water, eat extra salty that day or even get a sunburn I’m right back to straining and bleeding. Such a delicate balance 😬😔

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
