Was Your Doc More In Favor Of Gastric Bypass?

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

I haven't been banded yet (will be on 1/15/08!) and I was wondering if any of your doctors were more of a "fan" of Gastric Bypass over the LAP Band? Mine seems to be more in favor of GP b/c of the success rate. He didn't pressure me either way, but I was just curious if any of your Dr's had the same opinion?

My doc didn't pressure one way or the other (of course, I started out too low for a bypass, anyway). I went to an informational seminar that he did and he talked about bypass and lapband and the two other people there were candidates for bypass. But he didn't sway one way or the other. He gave statistics for both and pretty much left it up to everybody.

He did explain that some doctors are more comfortable with bypass because of the numbers, but also because it's so common in the U.S. and the most widely performed. He also mentioned something about a gastric band way back years ago that held the same promises as Lapband, but failed miserably and kind of scared some of the older docs away from gastric banding. Makes sense to me.

Mine was not biased either way, at least not for me. I know a few patients that had originally wanted a band but because of behaviors or health issues decided with the doctor to go the other way and get a bypass.

Nope. In fact I had originally started the process of trying to get approved for a bypass 5 years ago. I had a baby instead, and then went back to seem the doctor after she was born. He said he would NOT do a bypass on me. He is pretty much doing bands exclusively because he feels they are so much safer. He will do bypasses in extreme circumstances, but as a rule, no.

FWIW, he did bypasses for many, many years before he started doing the band. He isn't opposed to the surgery, just feels the band is safer and gets the same results.

Actually my Surgeon favor the band over gastric bypass.. He doesn't even do the GB.. (Im not sure if he ever did them but he now works from a place called DayOne Health and all they do is the band.

He actually told me why i shouldnt go with GB, and how Lapband was a better fit for me.:P

At the pre-op surgical visit, my surgeon DID encourage me to go the bypass route: because of my history of acid reflux.

He said acid reflux is enhanced with the band and if that happened, his only alternative for me would be a "sleeve".

But at my age, I opted for the less invasive surgery and guess what? I have had NO acid reflux in almost eight weeks! Of course, I also haven't had my triggers: Tomato products and chocolate!!

I love my band and could not imagine going the bypass route! (Did you know that the early bypass patients are now having their livers fail??? Learned that from my brother the doctor!) :P

Mine was biased for RnY. He had it himself.. and he mentioned if his daughter needed WLS he would give her RnY. There was 14 of us in the room, I was the only one wanting the band. But after the seminar, about 5 of the ladies said they wish they could get the band, but insurance doesn't cover it (a month later BCBS of AL did cover it, but I think we all had surgery by then).. I thought that was a bum way to be forced to choose, via your insurance.

My insurance made it easy.. they cover it, but not in my policy!

When he weighed pros & cons, he definitely was trying to sway everyone to RnY, but he didn't tell me he thought I was wrong for wanting the band. He just thought RnY was more successful.

My doctor wasn't in favor of any weightloss surgery. But He gave me a referal anyway. He thinks I should just diet and excerise.

My insurance company will only pay for GB, but my primary care physician was THRILLED I was having lapband instead. He is hoping my insurance company will eventually cover it, but told me not to wait for that "one day". He's even running my bloodwork to just give me peace of mind.

My surgeon didn't try to sway me one way or the other. I always preferred the band over RnY, having taken care of a lot of post-RnY patients in the ICU. I've seen a lot of very late complications (>5 years post op) to RnY that I wanted to avoid. But initially, my insurance only covered RnY. My surgeon said either surgery would be fine for me, although with about 75 lbs to lose, RnY might be a bit much. My surgeon left the practice not long after my surgery to go back to Canada, where his family was. But the whole practice, which at the time had 3 surgeons, did about as many bands as GB, and is a Center of Excellence, so they have lots of success with both surgeries.

I was going to have RnY if that was all my insurance would cover, but fortunately they did end up covering my band.

My surgeon was pushing for the Bypass surgery because I was 389 lbs and he figured the success rate was better. I guess it looks better for his stats when his patients loose more. Well now 7 months out I weigh 244 so pfffft to him and his bypass. I have a friend who was the exact same weight as me and had bypass a week after I had my surgery. Well I have lost more than him and he is having nutrition problems. We went out and he was complaining about how so many foods he can't eat now. I am happy I stuck to my guns. Just remember work your band to its fullest and you will lose the weight !:P

My PCP was completely against WLS altogether.. She actually told my surgeon that she just doesn't believe in it. He asked if there is any medical reason why a shouldn't and she couldn't give him a good enough reason so he Went ahead and gave me the ok..

My PCP gave me a lot of problems about his at first so i'm happy that my surgeon step in and stuck up for me...

8mths later and almost 68lbs lighter, I'm thrilled. And ironically mY PCP is thrilled with my results and happy that i did get the surgery.:faint:

Hi Julie. My doctor use to do 70% RYN and 30% lapband. In 1 and 1/2 years he is now doing 70% lapband and 30% RYN. Sounds just the opposite of your doctor. Lapband rocks!

I asked my doc flat out which surgery should I have and he said "If you were my wife you would be having the band." That was the end of that. I have had my band for 6+months now and I LOVE IT. For the first time in my life I look good, feel good, and have control. It is a great feeling.

My surgeon pushed for GB, he said that he can better control the out come of his patient's success if they do that GB and not Lapband.

The man has an ego.

But on the other hand, he calls me his rock star and said I'm the perfect personality type for the lapband, after the fact.

He still contends that 90% of people who need WLS will do better with GB than lapband.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
