Length of Hospital Stay Following Procedure

Recommended Posts

Good to hear! That nausea doesn't sound fun. I hope it goes away for you soon.

I'm in the pro-op phase. I've still got 2 appointments to finish next week and then it's on to wait for approval.

HAD SURGERY MONDAY AM, came home today (Thursday). I could have come home last night. Stayed the extra day because I had wicked nausea.

I am having my Sleeve surgery tomorrow and wanted to know what the length of your hospital stay was following surgery? I was told by the Surgical Nurse that called me today that some people go home the same day. The Medical doctor that did my clearance two weeks ago stated one night and my surgeon said one to two nights. Obviously its based on any complications that may arise but just curious if you don't mind sharing. Thank you!

Stayed a second night because I couldn’t urinate for about 8 hours the next day even though I was full of IV Fluid. I didn’t want to leave without that issue fixed. The second morning of hospital stay they checked my blood sugar and it was only 70. That is the bottom end of normal so they brought me some 1/2 apple juice 1/2 Water really quickly. My diabetes went away so much that I now carry a piece of hard candy in my purse just in case I’m feeling low/shaky.
I had a lot of pain at the site where the portion of my stomach was removed. My Dr said that’s the area where my abdominal wall was sutured to prevent a hernia.
They told me that 70% of patients go home the next day. I’m glad I stayed and had my blood sugar managed. Good luck to you!

Unbelievable answers!!! Can you believe this? I was in the hospital for 8 days in Germany in 2011! Wow. I simply cannot imagine going home after one day. I was in ICU the first night (no complications) and then was on an IV for the next week.I did have a uterus infection which kept me one more night. But I was so weak. I do have to say though that I was very well taken care of. Didn't eat anything except broth and tea while I was there (no wonder I was weak!) but still, what a different situation than now.

First of all, good luck to you! I stayed 2 nights only because it was covered for self-pay. I could've gone home the next night (yikes, not the same day) but I preferred being given meds to taking them myself. I'm not usually a pain med person but oy the nausea and thank goodness for Zofran. Walking around the hallways was key because it eased the pressure I felt from the gas. I didn't fart or burp a lot but walking did the trick. I threw up brown bile after gagging but surgeon checked and said it was normal. The worst part was the feeling in the recovery room and the vile crap they make you drink before the throat or swallow test. The rest was discomfort.

Were you in any pain? I'm thinking of the sleeve. First consultation Monday

Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

I have a sleeve...it was more like sore, like I did 1000 crunches or something. It did hurt to cough or sneeze though. Oh, and going over bumps on the ride home...i brought a small pillow to hug.

I didn't have any trapped gas pain either.

I did take pain meds on discharge day and nothing after that.

Pain does seem to vary alot from person to person though.

I stayed 2 nights in the ICU . Purely for observation as my oxygen level wouldn’t get passed the low 60’s until the 3rd day

I had the GS. I stayed 2 nights because. I arrived@ 10am but my surgery didn't happens till 3pm. So I slept the 1 day because of the anesthesia. The next day I walked & walked & tried to drink and then I left out on the 3rd day about 2ish. The nurses were really nice they told me to take my time getting dresser & to let them know when my ride was near&they would take me down .... due to Covid.. I was catered to very well in the hospital. But it was nothing like coming home where the REAL pain hit after 6hrs. 😆 but I wouldn't change that for the 🌎

Good luck on ur journey!!

It has hit me today, as I sit in my chair at work that I don't have my belly sticking out to where it would hit the desk. Oh and I can cross my legs more comfortably. It amazes me just how much I have loss in inches vs actual pounds, I have lost 24 lbs all together. But I believe in inches all over about 3 inches. I am noticing more energy and have pep to my step. My skin is a lot clearer. My watch band is shorter by 3 notches. the little things are what I am noticing. When I bend over I don't feel out of breath or I am going to fall over ( weeble wobble).
I am having a hard time with my sweet tooth, it is very hard to not want to get some ice cream or chocolate. Candy I can do without. I have no craving really for that, just chocolate and ice cream. I have gone as far as taking Popsicle and putting them in my mixer with almond milk and making like ice cream with that/ sometimes I have added un-flavored protein powder.
I feel better everyday. The energy is great to have with having younger kids and being able to have the energy to keep up. 😃

If anyone has any advice on how to make your stomach feel better after you eat something you shouldn't have or at too fast, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! It's painful on both sides of my abdomen (like to the point I'm doubled over and using a hot water bottle in addition to medicine) and I'm really nauseous (the thought or smell of food is 🤢).
