Can I eat candy

Recommended Posts

My immediate response is NO! Only 3 days post-op from sleeve surgery, I would think you should only be on a liquid diet. I didn't attempt anything close to solid food until week 3 - then it was only soft foods like scrambled eggs etc.

You may want to reach out to your doctors office before eating solid foods this early in your recovery process.

Not a good idea. I also attempted real food at week 3 and that was sugar free plain yogurt because I couldn't stomach the texture of eggs. I believe I could eat watered down oatmeal as well week 3. Didn't your surgeon provide any post-surgery guidelines? If not, I would contact the office and request it.

Not this early out, but eventually in moderation.

that depends - do you want to lose weight or not? You're awfully early out to be thinking about this.

let your clinic know you're in a lot of pain - they should be able to prescribe something to help with that.

I am almost 6 months post op, and I wouldn't attempt to eat candy, or anything sugary. It will make you sick.

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I think it’s normal to have buyer remorse in the first week. However if you don’t have pain meds prescribed, I would suggest you seek medical advice. My surgeon said any solid foods during the liquid and purée phase of recovery could cause the staple line to open. He said a previous patient who ate solids early ended up in hospital for 3 months, being feed through a tube as he ruptured his new stomachs staple line.
I am 10 weeks post op and I can now have a piece of candy and only need one to satisfy my sweet tooth. Like a normal person!

Couple of honest questions, no judgment meant. 1. Have you read any of the paperwork you were given? 2. Are you trolling? 3. If you are serious, you need to contact your provider and speak with them ASAP about what your diet needs to look like the next few months for your safety.

I’m sorry you’re in pain but chips, a sandwich or sweets are not going to stop the pain. In fact it likely will cause you more pain, other side effects & may be complications. Remember you just had major abdominal surgery. It’s why we slowly work our way through a liquid, then purée, then soft food diets for weeks before we start on solid foods again.

It does seem odd you weren’t prescribed pain meds on leaving hospital. You could still be experiencing gas pain which they used to inflate your abdomen during surgery. The best way to get rid of that is to walk. Even short walks about your house will help.

Always contact your medical team if you are in pain or experience anything that is not normal or usual. Ask them for a food plan & a list of foods you can eat as you work through the healing stage if they didn’t provide you with one pre surgery. Also, do you have a nutritionalist/dietician? If you don’t, ask your team for a referral to one who has experience with supporting bariatric patients.

You’re embarking on a journey that, if you work at it, will change how you eat & what you eat & lead to a slimmer & healthier you.

Good luck on your journey.

Please follow your dietary instructions. If you eat foods that are not allowed especially in the early stages you could end up with a gastric leak and would be in much worse condition and pain. I personally could not have a regular diet until 2 months post surgery.

2 weeks liquids, 4 weeks pureed, 2 weeks very soft (had to be able to cut with a fork) and then regular. I am in the first week of regular and still am careful and want to chew well with small bites.

My doctor allowed me to have sugar free lifesaver mints to suck on occasionally. I have a big sweet tooth and that is what got me into being obese so the further I avoid candy and sweets the better. I had this discussion with my mandatory psychology visits before I even had surgery. Maybe you need to revisit this information if you had this expectation prior to surgery.

Try to hang in there and remember why you started this method of weight loss. Revisit any information you were given pre and post surgery. This time will pass and I found the first 2 weeks hard due to the drinks (I was really sick of them but choose success vs. cheating)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
