VSG to RNY still have GERD

Recommended Posts

So it been almost 9 months since my revision to RNY from VSG. I had erosive esophagitis D and as of this past Dec it has gone down to an A. I still take Dexilant 60 mg and as I sit here typing I am on fire !!! Just wondering if anyone else is still going through this after being revised. I take the strongest PPI available that I am aware of but I shouldnt have to be on this PPI after the revision but here I am !

Did you revise to RNY because of the GERD ?

I had my revision on Dec 14th. At first I thought it had definitely worked but the past few weeks the reflux is back with a vengeance. I’m at a loss as to why it’s still happening too. 🙄

Hey All,

Interesting thread. I have constant heartburn and had a VSG in 2016. If you had it to do over would you still get the RNY revision? I am wondering if its worth it if you get the heartburn anyway and are still constantly taking the PPI's?

I would still get the revision because I had erosive esophagitis D. It has gone down to an A, so I shouldnt have to worry about getting cancer. I take 60mg Dexilant everyday plus carafate

So I had same experience. I thought I was cured the fist month or so and then bam !! I think we were so swollen from the surgeries. We didnt feel it until healed, at least that is what I feel happened with me.

What was your last EGD like before the revision?

I read where the roux limb may be too short in an article online, but I have no idea and none of it makes sense.

My EDG showed a good amount of reflux which was from my sleeve. Had the bravo probe placed to measure the reflux for 2 days. Showed severe reflux. My decision to go ahead with the surgery or take omperazol for the rest of my life. Sorry your going through this too, it’s a total bummer.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
