Protein and Water Intake 7 Days Post Op

Recommended Posts

So, I can get about 64 oz. of Water but trying to get Protein is kicking my butt. I just seemingly can’t get it in. I am 7 days out. Getting liquids down is harder too but I am getting there. Does anyone have any advice? Tomorrow is my purée stage. I really don’t want to fall behind. I just want to make sure I’m doing it correctly and feeling a bit defeated. I’m supposed to get around 70-80 oz of protein.

First thing is remember each step is just a stage. Don't get too hung up on the details. The important thing is to get in your liquid and move around. Protein can come in as Protein Shakes, cottage cheese, Bone Broth, at the puree stage you can actually get pretty creative and puree chicken, tuna, eggs just about anything but the main thing is to remember to go slow and take small bites.

70-80 ounces is just a goal and most people don't get close to that at first. Don't get too discouraged or hung up on the numbers. This is just a stage and your still healing. I am 6 weeks out and doing great and there are still days I don't hit my protein goal and have to drink a bone broth or thrown an egg in my meal plan to try to hit it.

Everyday gets easier but there are days that things are just tough to hit those goals and that does not mean you failed that just means you shoot for it again tomorrow.

My nurse told me not to worry about Protein in the beginning, and that it was basically impossible to get it all in when we are taking in such small amounts of liquid (and even in the puree stage as well). Just make sure you are staying hydrated. Best of luck to you!!!!

My nutritionist said the first week I didn’t have to worry about getting Protein so much, if my body doesn’t tolerate it, it’s ok. She said I can try drinking protein waters and Bone Broth (I’m a vegetarian, but I found a vegan protein vegetable broth), but the first week is just to rehabilitate, and keep it easy on the stomach.

Getting your liquids in is great! Are you able to do Protein Shakes yet? If so, those count as liquids as well. Protein Water is a great crutch too if you can stomach it (I find them vile). Once you get into purees it's difficult and feels impossible at first (so filling for many of us). Add some flavorless protein - One word of caution, make sure you measure out your portions so you aren't wasting a bunch of Protein Powder - I still have a hard time eye-balling my new portion sizes (I put WAY too much on a plate) just because it's what I've always done....

What about Protein Shakes? Protein Water? In the pureed stage you can have scrambled eggs and cottage cheese. I still, two years post-op, drink a Protein Shake every day.

I've been making my Protein Shakes with Fair Life (non-fat) milk which adds 13g of Protein per cup. It's a great way to add protein if you can tolerate dairy. shakes count for both liquids and protein too, so. There's also this Gelatein stuff which is protein jello- 20g per cup. It's shelf stable, so you can get it on Amazon. Protein Water too. Good luck!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
