Five Weeks Out...lost 30lbs post op

Recommended Posts

So...prior to having Gastric Bypass, I heard stories of people losing 15lbs a week. I was 297 lbs on day of surgery (09.08.2020). Today I am 267. Im curious as to the whether this is normal. I was hoping for more. My surgeon, nutritionist and fitness coach have assured me that I am progressing well. However, when I get on this forum I see people who have lost much more. Thoughts? I am eating my Protein. I walk about 6000 steps a day. I am optimistic as I write but I just want to make sure I am successful. On a happy note, I know that I am losing inches because my skinny jeans literally fell off the other day :)

They do say comparison is the thief of joy.

30lb in just over a month seems pretty good to me. You are doing great and are likely above average.

No doubt there may be some people who would have lost more in the first month but I can guarantee there are many many others who lost a lot less than that.

Weight loss in the first month is dependent on many things, surgery day weight, weight loss in the few weeks before surgery (if you've lost a lot then, don't expect to lose a lot in the first few weeks post op), gender, height, activity levels, surgery type, medical history/medication, post op diet as specifed by surgeon/dietician.

unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", the chances of you losing 15 lbs a week is pretty minute. Most "normal" WLS patients lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month - and it slows down after that. Of course, you'll always find outliers who lose more or less than that, but that seems to be about the norm for month #1. So you're perfectly normal - well actually, a bit ahead of the game.

P.S. I don't know where you're looking on this forum where you're seeing people losing 15 lbs a week. I've never seen that, and I've been hanging out here for five years.

OK, I had almost 1/4 ton to my goal weight and I lost 41 points the first month.

Of course, my Doc didn't care much about my weight, he was more interested in my health and happiness. Not once did he comment on how much or little weight I lost unless I did.

Doc was focused on me staying on plan. The rest will happen on it's own.

Get rid of your scale, that way you can't compare.

The average according to data is 20-60 a month for the first few months. So i would say you fit in that range good job!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
