Pre-op is NOT liquids

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone - just wanted to see if this was common or not. My two week pre-op diet is not liquids. It’s a diet focused on low calories and high Protein, but I get to eat actual food until Day 14. Is this common? I see so many people on here struggling with a liquid diet pre-op and I’m kinda confused why some have it and others don’t. Thanks for any insight!

Pre-op diets vary a lot from one surgeon to the next. There are some surgeons who don't require any pre-op diet at all until the day before surgery. Some surgeons may vary their pre-op diet requirements by patient (for example, a patient with a BMI over 50 who carries a lot of weight in the midsection may require a stricter pre-op diet to shrink the liver than a patient with a BMI of 35 who carries the weight in the hips).

Count yourself lucky that your surgeon has such a reasonable pre-op diet!

As BigSue says, there are as many plans as there are surgeons. Probably more.

If it's any comfort, my pre-op diet was food, until the day before surgery.

Do what your Doc says.

consider yourself lucky. Those kinds of diets aren't uncommon, but many of us have to suffer through the liquids-only version. Ugh. I wish I could have had at least *some* real food... Some programs do allow for that..

I was put on a Keto diet plan by my dietician for the 2.5 weeks pre surgery & I was ever so grateful. One friend was on 3 shakes a day for two weeks while another was on 2 shakes plus 1 high Protein low carb meal for 4 weeks. Which ever plan you’re given stick to it. It starts the process of re-examining your food habits & making better food choices so you can take the best advantage of your surgery.

Good luck with your surgery & on your journey.

Yes, it seems like every surgeon has a different plan, so yours is normal [emoji4] Mine will be 10 days, and is basically low carb, low calorie.

Yes, my pre-op diet will be I think 1 shake and two meals a day that are low carb and high Protein.

My pre-op diet will be a shake for Breakfast and lunch, high Protein Snacks in between meals from a specified list and then for dinner 4oz lean Proteins, 1 cup vegetable and I think half cup carb. Apparently they used to do the all liquid diet but found that it resulted in people cheating or having a really hard time sticking to it so I guess adding some solids in allowed for a higher compliance and still achieves the liver shrink. It's supposed to hit 60g protein, 64oz liquid and be less than 1200 calories I believe.

Its interesting that there are so many different plans depending on the doctor yet so many are successful. My doctor has me on 5 Protein Shakes plus 1 meal consisting of 3-4 ozs of Protein and 1 cup of green vegetables daily for 3 weeks prior to surgery. I found the Premier Protein shakes too sweet to have that many in a day so I just tried Isopure and its so much better.

I had two week diet like you and two days of liquids. The two weeks was a liver shrinking diet then two days of liquids to clear out system of food I guess. I was allowed steak and onions so my husband grilled me steak and whole onion on the grill almost every night. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to eat steak for quite a while so I figured I’d eat it till I was sick of it on the pre op diet.

Yes actually wanted to look for this information as I went for my surgeon appointment as well as Psych and Dietitian today....

The Dietitian said the same as yours regulars meals and I’d planned and researched etc to then hit a wall and feel very down and low.

Hello my surgery date is April 14th so I started my liquid diet on the first. Just wanted to know what some of you guys were drinking? I'm doing Slim-Fast no sugar high Protein Drinks. Not as bad as I thought it be.

Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app

I am a week into the pre op diet and I find it similar to what you are saying. It is not anywhere near as bad as I thought it was. For whatever reason I am not as hungry as I thought I would be. I have to watch myself because I tend to want o skip a little and eat too little calories which I hear is just as bad as too many calories.

I was so allowed food until 24 hours before surgery. A few Protein Shakes a day and a Protein and veg or a lean cuisine type meal twice a day.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
