What was everyone's average weight lost post VSG? (MONTHLY Average)

Recommended Posts

I've lost 63 pounds and I'm at 3 months out so I guess 21 pounds a month. I did lose 66 before my surgery. for a total of 129

I lost 16 lbs my first month and then for the next six months or so, I lost 10-12 lbs a month (it slowed down after that). I started out at over 300 lbs. But like you said, everyone is different. I would say on average, most people lose 15-25 lbs the first month, and then 10-12 or so lbs a month after that (but it slows down the further out you go)

I never did the math on this before. 8/18-8/19 I lost an average of 6.1 pounds per month. I had surgery at 204 and I lost s.l.o.w. I think one month I only lost 2-3 pounds eating less than 900 calories a day. I did lose it though! I even lost a few more since then.

Well, I am getting worried. Only 8 days out, but lost only like 3 pounds. Wth? Is this normal?

yes - normal. You were pumped full of IV fluids in the hospital and likely left heavier than when you arrived. Some people "gain" up to 10 lbs while in the hospital. It takes a few days to work its way out of your system

this is why I don't like it when people compare their weight loss with others, and why I hesitated to respond to the OP's question - although I put it out there regardless because I was a "slow loser" from the get-go, so I figured it might be OK for people to see that I was below average in the rate-of-weight-loss dept, yet I lost all of my excess weight ANYWAY. Your level of commitment to your program has FAR more influence on your ultimate success than your rate of weight loss ever will.

Regardless, this may or may not be your problem. You may be more of an "average" loser or even a fast one. It's too early to tell. But right now, it's the IV Fluid weight that you've dealt with. Should be out of your system right around now, though, so you should be on your way...

8 months out, and down 101 pounds. I started out super fast- lost 21 before I even had surgery. Was losing 5-8lbs a week for 3 months, then about 1-5lbs for 3 months, but now, I've settled out at 0.5-2lbs a week. I'm still losing and doing well for myself.

It's a lot of hard work, but it's so worth it.

Thank you soooooo much! Wish I could hug you. I think l'll be one of the slow losers, but like you said, either way I'm still a loser, so yay! Lol!

I do not look at numbers either. I focus on making sure I take in Vitamins, liquids intake. My goal is BMI 20 or less.

Mandatory Disclaimer: Everyone loses at different rates! Keep in mind people's starting weight, how much they lost prior to surgery, height, age and gender.

Starting weight: 235 (BMI 43.0)
Surgery date weight (after 2wk pre-op diet): 223.2

After 7 months of weight loss phase: 127 (BMI 23.2)

Sooo…including the 2wk pre-op diet, that would be 108 lbs lost over 7.5 months giving a monthly average weight loss of 14.4 lbs per month.

Edited to add: I lost a few more pounds unintentionally during maintenance, gained a few back, and currently sit around 115-117 (BMI 21-21.4). I’ll be 2 years out next month. I'm 5'2".

I’m two weeks out, I’ve only lost 10 pounds TOTAL, that includes the liquid diet. Sigh!! And I assume all of the IV Fluid weight is gone, so I’m just not really losing.

However, I have a pair of skinny jeans I try on every day to check the fit and they are definitely looser. So there’s that. It is frustrating to not see the scale move though. I went to my first appointment and my doctor asked how much weight I had lost and I was embarrassed because it was basically nothing.

Month 1: 30lbs
Month 2: 17lbs
Month 3: 15lbs so far (5 days left in the third month)

I’m a 6”6’ guy, and I was 393lbs the morning of the surgery. I lost about 90lbs pre-op, though not sure if that’s relevant to how fast/slow I’m losing post-op.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
