GERD, PPI's and low WBC

Recommended Posts

I had vertical sleeve in 2014. I can't believe its been 6 years. I have kept off the weight of 105 pounds for that 6 years bringing back the help of a dietician when I felt I needed it.

I have been on PPI's for longer to reduce acid reflux. I am just recently experiencing low white blood cell count. I have heard PPI's can suppress the immune system causing this issue.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there other medications not in the PPI family that were effective for your GERD issues? Any info appreciated...

I can't help with the medication side of things, but if your GERD is bad enough that you have needed PPIs for that period of time, has your doctor or surgeon discussed with you about gastric bypass which is known to bring relief from GERD for a number of people who have had a sleeve.

You could talk to them about switching to an H2 blocker (Pepcid) instead of a PPI (Protonix). I had to take both (and tums for breakthrough reflux) for about a month because the reflux was so bad before my VSG to RNY revision I was having hiccups I couldn’t deal with anymore.

Starwars and cupcakes,

Thanks for your insights! I would love to hear more about your second procedure. Hoping I don't have to go that route.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
