You are not doing this for your friends--you are doing it for YOU!! Yes, it would be nice if they were supportive, but if not be like Teflon and don't let their comments stick. Once your weight starts dropping they'll be like "Oh, you look so good! We're glad you had WLS!"

I mean even if everyone I knew disagreed I know this is what I’ll need to get back to a normal BMI.

I am really proud of you that you are able to know this is the best choice for you no matter what anyone else says. I know it can be very hard without family/friend support. I highly recommend going to the bariatric support groups available in your area and seeing a psychologist/counselor regularly.

You will find that everyone and their mother will have an opinion of your weight/weight loss.

It was a very annoying aspect of this whole thing for me.

If it's any consolation, after a while, you and your weight will become old news and no one will bother making comments/provide advice/express concern, and the like.

Try to let it roll off your back and just stay the course. The minor annoyances you have to deal with now will be nothing compared to how awesome you will feel later.

Good Luck!

My weight loss hasn't been that drastic as I was at a lower BMI (but still obese) and I had loss some weight previously, factor into that, covid lockdown so people haven't seem me for sometime. That said most of the people i have seen who I hadn't seen before I had lost 12 or so kilos recently (since about early March) haven't even batted an eyelid, haven't even looked twice. For those who did notice a weight loss, I said my gall bladder surgery (which was my excuse off work) triggered it was my time to get healthy and I had been eating better and less and exercising.

Takoda, do what is best for you and works for you - and that is from the beginning of the process all the way to the end.

Thanks so much for your advice:)

I had one family member and one close friend who were extremely critical of getting weight loss surgery. Both are quite obese themselves. I think they felt either threatened or jealous of the fact that I was doing something to take control of my health and my life.

This has been my struggle. I get the the most negative comments from overweight and obese people. And I am thinking, if the solution was so simple, why are the naysayers still obese? My motto for everything is, to each its own. My decision to have a weight loss surgery has no affect on them, why are they so bothered?

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
