Blood sugar issues post op

Recommended Posts

I had RNY-gastric bypass on 03-16-20. I am diabetic and have been for many years. Pre-op, we were having issues maintaining my blood sugar over 70 and I received dextrose via IV twice before my surgery started. The evening after my surgery, I was still having hypoglycemia issues requiring IV intervention as I was still not able to take anything by mouth. A couple days after my surgery, I began to have issues with high blood sugar that has required me to take insulin. Up to this point my blood sugar has been managed with pills. I have never been on insulin before. I have been following my diet but continue to have super high blood sugars. Sometimes into the 300-400 range. I have never had this issue before. I went through 2 insulin pens within the month post surgery. That is 600 units of insulin. My blood sugar starts to trend up even before I eat anything. It even goes up if I eat something with no carbs in it. Has anyone else had this issue?

That's unfortunate. My diabetes is gone and my blood sugar was fine before I left the hospital. I think you need to see a diabetes doctor.

Kyrrah, I am not sure if this will help but I was researching hypoglycemia after surgery and have been reading a lot about how it can happen because of the pancreas kinda malfunctioning in a way. Apparently the mayo Clinic has even done partial removal of the pancreas to help with it. About halfway down this article it talks about possible reason like B cells. I don’t understand much of it but maybe it can help you in some way.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
