How long till you farted after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi Team!

Excuse the vocabulary, but I wanted to be sure everyone knew I wasn't talking about passing the gas they use during surgery. I had surgery yesterday around 1pm and haven't slept a wink since I woke up from surgery. It's 6am now and I've been up all night. I'm just in too much pain to fall asleep! I've been wanting to fart since I came out of surgery, but haven't had one yet. It's like my digestive tract never woke up from surgery. I've read that most people are tooting immediately after surgery.

Is this normal?

How long until you cut the cheese after your surgery?

What can I do?

I'm seeing the surgeon in about 6 hours. Is there anything he can do for me?

Thank you all. Any advice is appreciated. PS. I've been doing knee to chest squats and raises, walking, and laying on my sides with knees raised.

It will come - But get out of bed and Put on your head phones and walk the halls! The more you move the faster you will get the gas out! I was skipping down the hall a few hours after surgery, within 10 hours i had most of the gas out! Now my brother had to get catheterized from the knock out gas, His lower unit stayed asleep!

Good luck and trust me Move your ass! and welcome to the journey

Thank you AJ! I have been walking like a crazy person and yes even doing a little jumping in an effort to get things moving. What do you mean your brother had to get catheterized? Like a rectal catheter?

@WhitneyLC84 Girl, I feel your pain. Ugh I wanted to pass gas so badly. I think for me it was day 3 too. Hang in there, it gets better every day. I finally slept about 4 hours about 24 hours after surgery by sittin down and leaving against the wall with like my shoulder against the wall. I asked my dr to prescribe me promethazine and he called it in. That allowed me to sleep as it makes you drowsy and the Charco Caps finally gave me some relief.

Thank you! You took charcoal the day after surgery? I'm scared to take it without asking the doc first.

Yes, I took the 2nd day after but if I would have had it the first day i would have—I’m counting first day as in the day I had surgery on 3/3. I went in the day after surgery on 3/4 as mine was outpatient for fluids and told my surgeon I was hoping my mom would stop at Walmart to get some on our way. He said that was fine. So she did, and I felt some relief finally on 3/4.
Of course, you will want to follow your surgeon’s instructions I’m only suggesting what helped me because I know the pain you are in. I hope you feel better soon.
I had tried gas-x but that is for gas in your colon And provide zero relief. The activated charcoal caps helps with gas in your body not just the colon.

I asked my doctor for an enema. I needed to fart (and do more) but I felt blocked up. The other gas in my body was dissipating from all the walking I was doing, but the back end needed some help. After the enema (which only loosened the stool a little bit) I was able to pass gas/fart much more easily and it felt so good afterwards!

Okay so I asked my surgeon. He said I could take it, but if I take it with the pain meds it will absorb the pain meds. So I think I'll try it once my current pain med wears off.

Just be careful as the days go on! You can’t trust a fart after Bariatric surgery! I pooped my pants 3 times when I was in the all liquids phase. Horrible, I know. Now I know after a really big one, the next one might be more lol. Happy tootin!! 💩😂🤮

Officially no longer over weight! Goal #1 reached! I'm now under 80kgs (176 lbs) at 179cm (5'10") and 10 months post-op and am over the moon. My weight at 79.9 kgs (176 lbs) gives me a BMI of 24.9 which means that I have a normal weight! OMG.
I still want to lose about 16 lbs more though in order to get safely into the middle range to insure against that little regain that happens. The I have maintenence in front of me as well.
BUT I have hit my first goal. Yeah me!!!

I had my gastric sleeve done September 10, 2020... I started out 330# before surgery.... I'm down to 260# now... I've been stalled out for over two months now.... I exercise when I can (Bad back/knees)... I follow my diet , get my protein and drink my water... But still not losing any weight... I've done everything I can think of to break the stall.... Even went back to liquid diet....  Sometimes I think this was a mistake having the surgery...

sorry to hear that don't feel down. Maybe a reset meaning something new. I am in the process of having the surgery a second time. I had Lapland in 2012 removed in 2018 and I have gained everything back and some. When I stalled on lapband I had to do something new for me I joined a free boot camp and Zumba and then boom dropped 38 pounds in 2 months. I know you said bad back and knees so find something with your limits. But I think try something new I stalled for 8 months

Happy anniversary to me - well almost. Friday marks the one yr anniversary of asking my GP if she thought I’d be a candidate for WLS.
What an exciting, sometimes frustrating but ultimately rewarding journey. I’ve lost 40kg or about 40% of my body weight & am below my goal weight. Some days I  just can’t believe where I am now from where I was 12 months ago. I never imagined this reality.
I am grateful for the encouragement I received from family & friends. I am grateful I have a supportive GP. They helped smooth the rough patches & kept me on track. I’m also grateful for this site. The information & support has been so helpful & eased many worries.
I’m still sorting out maintenance (what works one week doesn’t the next) but I’m up for the challenge.

      Too much anxiety and stress:
So lately thanks to COVID 19 (I don't have it though been trying to stay safe and healthy) I've been having severe anxiety and panic attacks lately. I've always had this problem but it's getting worse so as a result I've been having bad insomnia and getting sleep is hard for me right now. I wish it were easier but it's a work in progress AGAIN. I thought I got over this hump a while ago and was getting sleep but now my insomnia is back in full spring and I hate it! My grandmother is also moving on Tuesday and that is also stressing me out because I'll have no family nearby since everybody is in other states now thanks to California being too high. It makes me so sad man! But I am seeing her today on Monday for the last time before she leaves on Tuesday this week.
