Trying new foods and getting sick sucks

I tried the Ricotta cheese bake and now I’m so freaking sick! I bought two tubs of ricotta cheese because I was so excited to try it and I loved Ricotta before surgery. What a waste! This is a learning experience. I feel like I’m having the dumping syndrome again. So apparently anything with milk is going to mess with me right now. Thank God I’m at home when trying it out.
It smelled so good at first and now I’m nauseous from smelling it in the kitchen. This really blows.

I had the same issue! I thought what I had was dumping, but after emailing my surgeon he thinks the same as catwoman7: lactose intolerance. I was in pain/discomfort for 8+ hours after eating it, which is way too long for it to be dumping syndrome. The thing is, I've been eating other things - yogurt, cottage cheese, adding cheese to different dishes, even my Protein Powder is whey based - none of them cause the same reaction (well, except the Greek yogurt I had once I returned to Japan. Maybe different from the ones I had in Europe?). Despite the awful reaction with the ricotta bake, I still add cheese to other dishes. Shelly's egg bites have a lot of cheese in them and I made my first ones (in a long, long time) last night and had no issues. So my takeaway from this is don't eat a primarily dairy-based dish - it will cause too many issues. But adding small amounts of cheese (or other dairy products) to a non-dairy dish (like eggs) is okay. For now. I may try again in a few months time and see how things go then.

I feel much better today. The sick feeling only lasted for about an hour but it was still pretty terrible. I’m sticking with fair life milk for now and not trying anymore dairy-based products for a while. I’ve done well with Refried Beans, prunes, butternut squash Soup and eggs. I tried turkey sausage a couple of times and I understand the feeling of “cement” in my tummy so that’s something I can’t handle yet. It’s trial and error at this point. I don’t like the error part.

I had refried Beans last night, it was delicious and Ariel (my stomach) loved it!!!! I bought the smooth style by Rosarita, which is totally pureed and no lumps of beans. I added a little cheese on top and a little ground Turkey and chewed it until it was no more to chew. I had a few bites too much, but it has been my best meal since Ariel was born. I even slept good, I will eat this for the next couple of days.

Actually I disagree. As a chef i have done the same thing you are doing many times. But i take this journey a different way, We all had food and way to much food we loved! We choose to get healthy and live! so i love trying to design and eat new foods that i never did before. However you are way to early in this journey to go that strong towards dairy. The shock and awe plan does not work, Been there - I tried making chicken parm about one month out and dang near killed me - sick for 4 hours! Slowly progress into new foods but go easy on the dairy and sauces.

Here is on thing about your time that worked. I made spring rolls with top shelf ingredients. Air Fried and Jap Soup. Never ate these pre op but the different tastes and flavors got me going on this search for new foods - Do it every week now. For example this week doing all Grilling foods. Veggies. Fish, wings, Pork. But all healthy and tummy friendly. Sure i will hit a bump a food that does not sit right, but sure is fun trying to eat different

Good luck and be patient - Take it slow and you will get it

Hi CammyC, I'm 5 years out but I always take a small bite and wait about 5m to see how my body will react. This has saved me from extreme nausea or embarrassing moments in public. Now, I always judge for myself on what is healthy. For example, I ordered plain scrambled eggs at a restaurant and I got horribly sick afterwards. I felt as if I was in childbirth! 😰 They must have cooked the scrambled eggs in butter and my stomach reacted to it. Now I have a few restaurants that do not make me sick and I cook mostly at home. I rarely eat other people's cooking. I've learned my lesson with that too!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
