Corona delaying weight loss surgery dates? Anyone?

I am glad you said that because I have been quite with people I know because I felt like it was very disappointing for me but I felt like I would be judged as selfish for feeling disappointed. Normal people that don’t have issues like we do just don’t understand. I work with someone that struggles with about 40 lbs but thinks that this surgery is the easy way out and really believes that theory that I should just try harder n exercise more. So it’s impossible to talk to her. So I just keep quiet and it’s like disappointment is just trying to eat you alive. It’s very frustrating. I really cannot wait for life to go back to the normal.

I absolutely understand the disappointment und frustration all of you must feel. I also think it's important to talk about this and no, maybe coming across "a bit selfish" doesn't matter. Come across as "selfish" as you like.

Whenever the disappointment and frustration hits and you're all like "F*ck this damn virus!!", maybe you could remember some things:

- your surgery is postponed, not cancelled.

- you wouldn't want to be in a hospital now or in a few weeks down the road if you can help it.

- ICU capacity is limited and every surgery has the potential to bring on the need for being on the ICU. You don't want to need a bed on the ICU during the next weeks because there might be none available the moment you need it.

- you don't want to be in immediate recovery from abdominal surgery as long as COVID-19 runs rampant. My revision is 4 weeks ago now, the fixing of a hernia only a week and I'm asking myself if my immune system is already as competent as it usually is - not a fun thing to ask yourself these days.

When feeling all of this completely understandable frustration and disappointment maybe try to remember that WLS is always abdominal surgery including general anesthesia with lots of complications being possible and not a quick and unproblematic surgery so many patient's recovery is really easy from.

I'm absolutely sure that all people on this thread are completely aware of the things I wrote above. However, it can be hard to remember when disappointment and frustration hits.

Hang in there! Your surgery is postponed, not cancelled.

I'm in delaware...schedule and approved for 4/9. My surgery will be at a surgery center. I received a call today from the nurse going over my medical history. I asked of the likeliness that I would be rescheduled (which why I thought she was calling) and she said everything still looks good for 4/9. My state has a stay at home order effective tomorrow.

It's MY time!

Welp...just had my Telemedicine appt with my surgeon. It's been canceled. I'm REALLY ok with it. Better safe than sorry and/or DEAD. He assured me that I was at the top of the list when they start rescheduling....but that's about it!

It's MY time!

It is comforting seeing other people are feeling EXACTLY how I feel....my surgery date is “to be determined” and it’s heartbreaking....I understand the reasons but it unfortunately doesn’t help soften the blow 😔

It’s time.
We all feel your pain. We are all here for you to vent if you need. I know I have. But like people said to me it’s not No it’s just not Now and as much as we really don’t want to hear it we are safer and better off waiting a few months. We All Will Get There it is All Our Time To Shine 🌞

Always here for you, I do understand. I am blessed enough that most people involved in my day to day life understand how real this is. I did loose 70 pounds once.... found it all and since have been completely unable to loose anything. The surgery was recommended to me as the best option for repairing my hiatal hernia/GERD/esophageal spasms. Once I did my homework I feel that it really is the best option for every aspect of my life.
As for the co worker, they haven't walked in your shoes.

Hang in there, our time will come!

I understand totally! We have to just say it was for a good reason. Let’s just continue to pray this corona is gone soon, and we can get scheduled again. 🙏🏽

This uncertainty is killing me!!!! I know I am a little bit of a control freak... but not being sure of my surgery date is making my anxiety super high. I coordinated alot of moving pieces to make my surgery date happen.... Scheduling time off from work, Coordinating care for my mother who I care for after a stroke, child care for my kids, Flight for my daughter to take me to procedure, travel and hotel since my insurance has made me have procedure in Atlanta..... I called the surgeons office yesterday and they said I was still on the schedule and then the Governor of Georgia enacted the stay at home.... and as i'm typing this Northside is calling to re-schedule my upper GI to May.... but I need it prior to surgery on 4/13.... ARGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

I'd explain that to them - that you need it done prior to a 4/13 surgery. They were trying to do that with my sleep study (although this was five years ago - not during a pandemic), and I told them I had to have it done before my bariatric surgery, so they backed off and kept the date. I don't know if they will in your case, but it's worth a try.

I had a recently retired surgeon tell me.... he expects that elective surgery will not be back in full production until at least Sept, 2020 and any hiccup at all will delay it till 2021.

Unfortunately I think that he might be right with this. However, I also think that it will be dependent on the area you're living in.

Anyway, I don't think I need to make any plans for having plastics anytime soon.

You can guarantee it's on hold. Once the state of emergency happens- all elective surgeries and procedures are postponed until after it is lifted. Already lived that reality here. I was april 1, state of emergency cancelled.it. now it's an indefinite wait. Most doctors are predicting July august before we get scheduled. Maybe june if we are lucky

STOP!
I can’t EVEN!
I can’t think about surgery delay to 2021 I will lose my mind

I was 3 days away.
Lisa I am so sorry about your situation. It’s really hard to make these arrangements and jump through the hoops and it’s all out of our control.

between sick parents and kids out of school and still trying to work at home while being a nurse and schoolteacher is extremely overwhelming.

my fear is that I will completely give up and revert back to my old habits not having the pool or gym to go to anymore, and my favorite thing to do is eat when I’m depressed, I don’t feel like going out for a walk or anything. Just stuck again

so I feel you I really do

We won't give up...... but we sure can complain about (until we feel better anyway )!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
