Depressed / Feel Like I’ve Failed

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved about 4 years ago - I am 6’, was 36 at the time, about about 290. I got down to 240 at my lowest and now hover at 245-250. I feel like a failure in what I did and the outcome. I have battled depression for a while. I take Xffexor 150mg daily and I just sort of lost touch and ignore the guidelines to follow (daily vitamins/good food choices/etc). I need a jumpstart to get good habits formed again. I don’t want to wait till “new year”. Thinking of the pouch reset diet (5 day?). Just wanted to communicate with others and try and feel better physically and mentally. This isn’t as good as it can be. I know I can feel better and do better.

I feel your pain!!! I'm 5'2" was 270 at surgery now 2 yrs PO I'm at 182 my lowest was 165 so I gained roughly 20 lbs. Don't give up!!! I was feeling pretty sad as well. You need to join a support group where you have ppl to talk to. Posting this is the first step in right direction. You want to change your life for the better. I don't know much about puch reset it might be very difficult to do, not sure if it actually works. I just started logging everything I eat and set a caloric goal for myself. I will see how I do and than adjust accordingly. The main thing is not to give up!! We've all made bad decisions in our past, don't let those decisions ruin all that you still have left!!
Whenever I would feel low, I would grab some junk food. Now i good work out can really lift my spirits.
You can do this, I have faith in you!! [emoji2][emoji2][emoji2]

It actually works very well for some folks. I have a family member that has been doing well for years taking it in combo with a few other meds.

If it is not working well for you, do not hesitate to see your dr and try something else. There are many things out there. You just have to find what works for you.

What I have seen some people do that are attempting to restart their weight loss is go back to basics. Start where you were just after surgery. Do liquids then soft foods, etc. always be sure to get Protein first.

Good luck!!!

Hey nate, just a thought but have you discussed increasing your Effexor? I am on the same dose as you but was on 3 tablets a day for a while, 1 in the am and 2 in the pm. Really helped me get out of the pit I was in. It may just be what you need to get to a head space that will help you stay on track x :)

I personally wouldn't do a pouch reset (I've read too many negative things about it) or liquids/protein shakes only - that's pretty hard to sustain for more than a couple of days. Just start eating the way we're supposed to - Protein first (60-80 grams a day for most of us), then non-starchy vegetables, and then, if you have any room left, a small serving of fruit or "healthy" carb (like something whole grain). Log everything you eat and be mindful of your overall calories (and calorie range is an individual thing - you may to experiment for awhile to find your "sweet spot").

I agree with the above posters that a support group might be helpful, too...

also, some anti-depressants can cause weight gain. I'm not sure about the one you're on, though. If it's one of those that does cause weight gain, maybe check with your doctor to see if there's a different med that might work for you?

Hey Nate, sorry you feel like you've failed WLS. I think that's the deep dark dirty fear we all have and it's also a lie we tell ourselves.

The only way to fail is to totally check out and not try any longer. But I don't see that in your intention!

I agree that if you are still depressed, you should run not walk to your psych and or doc and ask to have your meds adjusted to either another dose or to a different combination.

Some other things that help:

Exercise (walking), especially in sunlight and fresh air/green areas. And if you can walk fast until you feel pooped even better, but you may not have the strength for that, so work with your doc.

Practice deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. Pray or meditate. Google four square breathing. Really great stuff.

Watch comedies and laugh out loud.

Smile at yourself in the mirror and envision you dressed in a Super Hero outfit.

Find someone you love and hug them tightly, rocking, for a long time. Or hug your pet!

Then clean out your pantry, fridge, and freezer. Clean out the booze closet too.

Begin planning, tracking, weighing, measuring your food.

Here are your rules to start:

3 meals + 2-3 small Snacks (no more than 100cals each and low carb high protein):

Each meal = no more than 1 cup of food by volume = 2-3 oz of lean dense Protein by weight + 1-2 oz of al dente steamed dense veggies + 1 tsp healthy fat equivalent: olive oil, ghee, butter, avocado oil, coconut oil or 1oz avocado.

snack Ideas:

Hard boiled egg

1oz Boar's Head Turkey or Everroast chicken

1oz Leftover Dense protein

1oz reduced fat cheese + 1/4oz almonds

2oz Granny Smith apple + 1/4oz almonds + 1 lite string cheese

4oz Greek Non Fat Yogurt + 1oz blueberries

1 Jello sugar free cup + 1/4c Plain Greek Yogurt + 2-3 drops liquid vanilla stevia

1 sugar free popsicle

1cup raw veggies + 1/4c Plain Greek Yogurt + 1/2tsp Ranch Dressing Mix or Lipton Onion Soup Mix

You should come take my poll here:

You are NOT a failure, you are on a journey. When we fall we learn lessons. You got this, you know what to do. Try to get to a support group with real people, not just online.

OMG. Effexor is fine until you go off. I had horrible withdrawal symptoms requiring ER visit. I didn't realize I was having withdrawal and thought something was really wrong with me. I had limb jerks, horrible headache and flushing. Never stop Effexor cold turkey. Do a slow dose reduction as advised by your doc. I will never take Effexor again.

It’s great that you realize all this. It’s ok. You fell of the wagon. It happens to all of us sometimes. Start now not tomorrow and get right back at it. It will make you feel better on the inside as well.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
