Hi! Got my date yesterday - 1/28/2020. Having RNY - Overland Park, KS (Bariatric and Metabolic Specialists; surgeon is Dr. Roger de la Torre). Surgeon said it's the best option for a newly-diagnosed Type 2 diabetic. Nervous, excited, everything all rolled up together for the life change! Pre-OP requirement -1 week liquid diet. I may have more pre-OP requirements when I see the nurse-practitioner Jan 16th.

Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

I am having VSG with Dr de la Torre on Jan 16. I just started my 1 week liquid diet. I found this at Walmart and they are delicious, but won't be able to have them after surgery for a while because they contain caffeine.

Cafe Latte

So happy to hear it went well! Please keep us posted on how you are feeling.

I'm just about ready, wanted to share with my graduating class as well. (Broths, plates, utensils and other items not pictured) maybe later when I get closer.

Wow! Thanks for sharing the pictures of all the items you've purchased to get prepared. I'm not nearly that well-prepared yet and seeing your pictures is helpful.

You're welcome, when is your surgery?

Just curious, is anyone who is scheduled for next week still awaiting insurance approval? Or anyone who just had the surgery not get approval until the few days prior?

I am scheduled for Wed. 1/15 and I still do not have approval. I'm being told this is very common in January as the insurance companies are bombarded with requests due to people changing coverage.

It's really stressing me out at this point...I am not a fly-by-the-seat of my pants person. Tell me I'm not the only one?

We are bookends, your surgery is on Monday/27th and my surgery is on Friday/31st. costco has Premier Protein on sale (2 cases max) for 19.00 each until 01/26 I believe. Wal-Mart grocery store is good for our Jello and sugar free Popsicles, Trader Joe's has plenty of broth varieties. I've been shopping as I go, building my supplies and getting ready for the transition to bariatric surgery. I also live alone and don't want to be without my needs during recovery time. My focus is going to be on rest, hydration and walking in the proper time intervals.

Has anyone started taking Biotin before their surgery to help lessen Hair loss? I read somewhere to start taking it a few weeks before surgery.

I read that as well. I have been taking it for a couple of months now. I haven't noticed any changes positive or negative. Doctor said to stop all supplements 1 week before surgery, so I will pick it back up after surgery when my stomach has recovered a bit.

We are the same week, that liquid life is real.really here. Let's keep each other inspired, I have my final pre-op appointment with the surgeon on the 17th. Surgery on the 31st and last night I got a call to schedule my 1 month post-op appointment for March 2nd. The only detail I'm not privied to is the time of surgery.

My hospital preop is also Jan 17! I have my one week appt on 2/4 🤨. On one hand I’m ready (bags already packed) but I’m nervous.

As I was typing that, I got an email that my surgery was scheduled for 7:30am on 1/27. Cool.

I'm too darn emotional as of this week, because its a lot closer than I thought. I'm going to pack my bag after I come from the appointment next Friday, I already have too much going on. I'm cleaning up my domain this weekend and getting ready for recovery. I guess these emotions are releasing with the fat, I have no clue....PMS magnified times a million.

I'm happy for you, if I weren't sitting in the dentist's chair I'd start crying for you, lol. Crazy

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
