CrossFit, VSG, Calories In vs Calories Out

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone, I am 7 months post surgery and my current weight is at 138lbs, my goal is to get to around 121 / 127lbs. So I went out looking for some sort of exercise I’d enjoy so that it would be sustainable. I did a free CrossFit trial and I’m really enjoying it so I’ve signed up and have been doing it for a few weeks now.
I really struggle to get to 60 grams of Protein some days so extra Protein Shakes etc won’t be an easy task. Has anyone else found an intense sport post VSG that they really enjoy and have carried on with? How do you manage physically? Have you lost muscle (protein / calorie intake) ? Gained muscle?
Felt better? Worse? Some guidance would be really helpful!

Thank You in Advance.

I started training for a triathlon when I was 7 months out (and finished it!!!). My challenge was to get enough calories in to sustain the exercise without losing weight. It's very hard when your tummy can only hold a little bit. I was already doing weights, a leg routine and lots of walking. My muscle mass was fine before and became more defined with the added swimming and biking. I had to drop the Intermittant Fasting because I simply could not get enough calories in an 8-10 hour window. So I started doing a Protein Shake for Breakfast. During the event, I ate RX bars (210 cal, 24 carbs, 12 protein) - good amount of Protein to balance the carbs, as I knew I couldn't eat a high carb load by itself - dumping would not be good in a pool or on a bike! I felt great afterward and am planning on a distance bike race next month and another tri in a few months.

I am transitioning to a whole food plant based diet, which has more carbs from grains and legumes. But I still struggle to maintain weight. I am stuffed full and never hungry, but still losing each week. As I increase my training, I will have to use more RX bars, I guess, to get some concentrated calories in.

I think it is important to keep your protein up. You don't want to skimp while you are training and increasing your workouts. I add Protein Powder to my smoothies, yogurt bowls, and Soups. I have no problem getting enough protein - just enough calories.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
