Anyone else NOT eating like they should Post-op?

Recommended Posts

Let me explain. I'm currently in Phase 3 of my Post-op diet. Which is supposed to be soft foods. I can have moist soft meats and veggies whole. I just need to thoroughly before swallowing. Duh. But this part right now has been extremely difficult. I actually prefer stages 1 and 2. liquid and pureed foods. Weird?

I'm eating low cal/zero sugar "snacks" as a preference. cheese sticks, Jello, pudding, fruit cups in natural juices. Mashed potatoes and pureed meats mixed together with veggies. All weighed and counted like I should. But because of the absolute sickness I get from regular eating, I avoid what I'm supposed to be doing as part of my doctor's diet plan. I don't eat what I'm not supposed to, like candy and fried foods etc. But I feel like I'm stuck in a rut. I'm still losing hella weight.

I'm just wondering if anyone else is going through this as well. Thanks!

Maybe you need a longer mushy phase. It doesn't seem to be that uncommon. I can remember that there was being talked about this and the dietitians simply said that you should introduce the solids slower. What doesn't work today might be working three days later.

If you continue to have problems you should see your treatment team though.

AS the world's longest Stage 2 , at least SOME DAYS I feel that way, may I throw in my advice. Make sure you are taking your vitamins/ minerals One of the reasons you're moved along is to ensure you're getting everything needed in a balanced amount and to make sure as a VSG, RNY or even a lap-band (although there aren't as many of these as once there were) that your body can handle and get maximum value from these all.
I am a special case, and truly it WAS NOT MY CHOICE, shortly after my surgery, they say 6 weeks but I truly believe much sooner, I started having difficulty with the diet progression. It had been my surgeon's advice to move me as an RNY at 3 weeks to level 3, but every time I tried I vomited, even mild nomally easy things. They offically validated this. at 6 weeks when a follow-up endoscopy showed my pouch was very inflamed, structured and both it and the adjoining small intestine, the jejunem were very ulcerated. So far no bleeding or perforation, but it is always a possibility. And my surgeon's Junior partner, who routinely does the endoscopies for the practice and I have tried. First I am one of the very people Omeprazole is Not Gastroprotective for. FYI, when I was under my gastroenterologist's care in the end of 2017, he discover I had a small gastric ulcer as well as gastritis. I had disclosed this when. finally scheduling my surgery, but it was their practices usual plan to put their patients on this drug post- surgery. And surprise surprise, I ulcerated again. So after this endoscopy I was permitted to resume my Dexilent, another PPI, higher- priced (over $300 monthly, if cash, but my insurance covered) and Carafate to help coat and heal the ulcerations. I take it 6am-noon-6pm-midnight and have every since last October 12th. Each follow-up endoscopy, and I gave had 12 or 13 now in my lifetime,as a matter of fact I have another scheduled today at 11 AM, an attempt is made to dialate my opening. The first few times I was just too red and swollen for it to work, but she and I have not given up- My theory, and it's just mine, is that somehow I gave developed a ring of muscle that snaps shut. But we still are not giving up. The end of November I wasn't as meticulous about my diet, my ulcers got worse, I got into a state of malnourishment and extremely low Protein levels and had to be re- hospitalized. And the next day I had a PICC line placed in my upper left arm and was fed a nutrition solution 12 hours a day , I believe this truly saved my life at this point, this went on for 3 months with weekly blood levels run, this was d/feed in the end of February, I have regained back my health but still required an Iron INFUSION in late March. And I have learned how to keep my nutrition balanced all though per her instructions, I still do not attempt more than a very liquid diet. Oh it CAN BE DONE, but it is Not very easy. And like a thirsting traveler I do long to be set free. Each EGJ I pray that things will be at a normal state and I can move on! They have not confirmed it, but my underlying fear is that I will require further surgery. This was not the way that things go normally. Burnt I am a Brave Little Camper who still believes in my doctors and myself, and we will triumph, no matter how long it takes. I hope my insight has helped you, but please bring your doctor " back into the loop" and follow their advice. This is my first WLS but my doctors have handled and helped many patients to success so I trust their wisdom greatly!

It's so interesting the difference between what American and British doctors recommend post-surgery. The two weeks before my operation I was told I should drink 2l of semi skimmed milk per day (2% milk), at least 1l of Water and have one drink of chicken broth per day. It was TOUGH but my liver was perfect for surgery so it did the job. And then post-op, i had two days of water only as I wasn't hungry and still pretty sore & dazed from surgery. However after that I was told I could start the puréed diet (6 × 120ml pureed food per day) and that this phase should last a month. Stage two is soft foods without lumps. I'm only a week post-op but I'm grateful for the puréed food stage as I don't feel weak like I did during the pre-op diet as I can finally eat chicken, vegetables, Protein. My surgeon stressed the protein amount I needed per day but there's no way my new tiny tummy can choke down 70g of protein per days PLUS 2 litres of water.

Even in America there is a huge variety of differences between provider. My stage 2 was Protein Shakes but for others it is purees. I'm starting purees now at 2 weeks post op. I tried a few days early but vomited.

Although I didn't experience it, it's not abnormal. As a matter of fact, my nutritional guidelines state if you have problems with the next stage, then revert to the previous stage; however, if illness persists, call the office.

Try the savory Protein options from Unjury. I switched to chicken noodle Soup flavor post op when I suddenly could not tolerate anything sweet. You are not taking a reflux medication post surgery?

Just tell yourself that the hunger is in your head and let it pass or go for a walk to distract yourself. The first two weeks were the same for me too--I equated it to quitting smoking. You are reprogramming your brain to perform lifelong routines but suddenly without the meals/snacks and drinks. It will pass.

I am one week post op and starving with the worst acid reflux right now. I’m sick of the shakes as I want real food. I tried broth which helped for a second but I believe it caused my acid reflux. Any suggestions? My surgeon wants me on this liquid diet for another month.
You can do it if you have the right mindset. I'm still on liquids 3 months post OP due to complications. It is boring, but doable. Good luck!

I was very hungry one week postop. I started eating shredded meats and mashed potatoes. I’m doing great! Watching portion size and not having any problems with nausea.

Thanks for the encouragement. I went to get some chopped spinach and berries to blend in to my smoothies for a switch up. I’ve been watching Dr. Wiener on YouTube that mentioned that it’s important to start going to the more natural smoothies. Check it out

Oh yes! Ive been on stage 3 foods about a month now... and Im having so much trouble finding food thats approved. Its either I dont like the food or its too heavy on my stomach. So I tend to eat the same boring things every day. Its hard.

Thank you for the info. Yes the anti acid pills are a God send.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
