How long until you felt “normal”

Recommended Posts

Define normal. haha. I mean, my entire lifestyle has changed. Every post-op issue I had subsided around 4 months and I was back to full regular activities. I get sick if I eat too fast, of course, so that isn't quite normal. I really need to work on that. Every day I am mindful of what goes in my mouth and how much activity I am getting - which wasn't my normal. But I am living and doing and working like I was before, except lighter. Since I am still in the weight loss phase, it is sort of all-consuming my life since I have a goal to reach. But having that big milestone keeps me going. I think I feel more normal now than I did before... since now I can actually go out and do things like a "normal" person without feeling uncomfortable or out of breath.

Yes, I agree with everything Mousecat said 😂.. I'm 4 months post op, and I feel sooo much better this month than last month. I am somewhat back to having fun with my friends on the weekends, but normally I would consume loads and loads of Vodka and beer... So, my new normal is 1 to 2 Michelob Ultra. Normally I would just lounge around watch tv after work, our new normal is to walk about 40 minutes after dinner. Normally I wear a size 2X and jeans 18-20, I now can fit into a L-XL and size 12 jeans! whoo hooo.... I like the new Normal Me!

Give it time. You will feel all sorts of weird stuff after the surgery but always remember why you did it..... You got this!

I’m just curious and I know everyone is different but just want to hear how long after surgery until everyone started to feel their normal selves again?

1 month post op: semi normal

4 months post op: like it never happened

Almost 6 weeks out and I feel pretty normal. Eating is obviously very different, in terms of what and how much I eat, but then, that's the whole point! I am so happy that I had the surgery.

At one month I felt pretty good. Now at 7 weeks I’m feeling pretty much myself.

It took a couple months to get my energy and strength back to pre-op levels. Now at almost 10 months out, I have more energy than I’ve had in over 29 years.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
