Questions about 1st month post band....

Recommended Posts

Yes, i have another question. :) hopeing someone can help. the first two weeks we need to be on a liquid diet, can you guys give me some suggestions as to what this may include? i know that broth, sprite,

7 up, etc. what about popsicles? any help is appreciated.

also, can we start using protien poweder in our liquid right after surgery like the Unjury? can we take vitimans , like chewable ones the first 2 weeks. i just know that the first month is goign to be the hardest. I need help with anything that can make it as easy as possiable.

one more question, what kind of pain medicine do they give you when you go home? hopefully something strong that will knock me out so i don't have to deal to much with my hungry stomach growling. all this worrying but i am very excited to be having the surgery. looking forward to the changes......:hungry:

I was told absolutely no carbonated drinks whatsoever. Trust me...you don't need any extra gas in there. The hardest part has been the gas and trying to expel it politely.

Don't worry about being too hungry....if your tummy grumbles, take in some liquid and the hunger pang goes away. Just keep hydrated and you shouldn't feel hungry, at least I haven't yet.

The pain killer that was prescribed for me was Hydrocodone in liquid form. The first two days after surgery I did sleep alot, but after that I didn't need to. You'll do fine as long as you're ready for this committment.

Good Luck!

:welcomeB: to LBT, and congrats on your decision to get the band and get healthier!

Unfortunately I can answer NONE of your questions, no one can unless they went to the same surgeon as you. Sadly, almost every surgeon is different in what they will and will not allow you to eat/drink/give you to take post-op. I could tell you what my surgeon did, but if your surgeon is more conservative, that won't be helpful. If your surgeon is more liberal than what mine was, then you wil have worried for nothing. I suggest you call your surgeon's office first thing in the morning and leave a message for someone to call you and ask these questions of them. I really do wish I could help but again, I cannot say what your surgeon will allow.

One thing I can say is that the unflavored unjury dissolves in Clear liquids and I can't think of anyone who has yet said they couldn't have it. Popsicles melt to clear liquid so they are almost always allowed. Frequently Jello is allowed as well during clears. Again, ask YOUR surgeon's office.

The most important thing to remember is that this is a short period out of your life, a few weeks. You've been heavy for YEARS, you can do a few weeks. It is so very important to follow YOUR doc's post-op rules because the band gets "seated" into place around your stomach by the formation of scar tissue. It is sutured in place in the front of the stomach, but they can't get to the back to suture it and have to rely on Mother Nature to scar it into place. Your stomach needs to churn as little as possible (food=more churning to digest, liquids=less churning) to allow the scars to form.

Forget the soda. I was told no soda for six months because the carbonation will stretch the pouch. For my liquid diet, I was on fruit juices (watered down), broth and Water. (special K water and Vitamin water OK) The second and third week I had Protein Drinks, liquid yougurt (like Danactive), and first week liquids. Popsickles are fine and so are chewable vitamins. I read here the other day that one doctor said the gummi Vitamins were great if you didn't like chewables. I bought some and they are just yummy. You need to water down the juice so you don't get diahrea.

I get the impression you've yet to be banded and to tell you the truth, those first couple weeks are the easiest if you can just overcome the head hunger.

GOOD LUCK

Congrats Tralynn222!! You are doing great!!! Thanks for the info too. I am scheduled 12/13, looking forward to starting a new lifestyle! I have been incorporating small differences for the past 3-4 months. It has helped, but I am ready to go full throttle!

And yes, no carbonation (no Sprite) right after surgery. Some docs say never again, some say let it go flat first, some say it's fine after a certain period of time... Again a question for your doc and nutritionist.

I was told no carbonated drinks anymore by my dr. Yours may be different.

Mine allowed Protein Shakes right away, along with Jello, sf popsicles ( let them melt in your mouth), broths, strained Soups with no solids.

That was about it for me. Its really not bad. I had no hunger for the first 3 weeks after surgery.

My doctor said to focus on Protein first such as bariatric Protein shakes or other Protein fortified liquids for bariatric patients. Our goal was to ingest 90 grams of protein per day in three "meals." It really helped me not to feel hungry all the time.

To meet the 64 ounces of Water per day requirement, I could have clear broth, sugar free popsicles, Jello, yogurt, Crystal Light, and plain Water. We weren't encouraged to drink sugary fruit juices.

My doctor forbids carbonated beverages at any time after banding. Even though I was a Diet Coke-a-holic before banding, this has not been a problem for me at all since the surgery. I don't miss soda one bit (mainly because I like my smaller butt so much)!

As always, follow whatever your doctor has advised and be sure to ask questions if you need clarification.

Keep up the good work!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
