Have many people not been advised a pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

My surgery isnt until mid June, but when I enquired about a pre-op diet, they just said to lower my carbs a week or 2 before the day. (Getting surgery Europe). My BMI is around 36 if that has any bearing?

When I had my revision I was told not to worry about a preop diet to just stick with clean eating

I didn't have a pre-op diet. I just had to be on full liquids the day before surgery.

I was given a preop diet that starts 2 weeks before surgery. The dietician I spoke with told me that it’s to help shrink my liver a bit so the surgeon can get around it more easily during the surgery.

I was also put on a 2 week pre op diet. 2 shakes and 1 small meal. 1000 calories a day. I was told the same thing about shrinking the liver, thus making the surgery easier. Also, it prepares your body for the way it was going to be working after the surgery to break down food. Just on this diet, in 5 days I have lost 7 lbs!

And after surgery, when you do have to do it, the habits are ingrained and nearly Second Nature.

I dont think 2 weeks ingrain a habit at all. I've stucks to plenty of 1000cal diets before for more than 2 weeks, as I'm sure a lot of us have, and they've never stuck, hence the surgery. ;)

I'm going to try and stick to 1000 calories anyway, I'm presuming I've not been given a pre OP diet because I'm on the lower BMI scale than a lot of people getting surgery but I'd like to feel better prepared

I'm having my surgery in about 3 weeks. My doctor gave me the low calorie, 2 Protein Shakes a day, small dinner diet. I have to do it for only a week. I will probably be a cranky jerk for that whole week.

I'm on the lower BMI side and i was given a 2 week pre-op diet . 4 shakes, broth and Jello, 😐 But my dr said its something he requires all his patients follow it irregardless to shrink the liver.

I haven't been given one. I started today giving up breakfast for a Protein Shake. I got hungry though and ate a little cottage cheese for a snack later.

My program requires a 2 week liquid diet before the surgery. The reasons are to shrink the liver a bit before surgery, to get you into ketosis before the surgery, and to get you in the right mindset heading in to surgery. I don't have a strict number of shakes to have each day, just between 4-6 as I'd like. I've been preparing myself by having 1-2 shakes a day so far, so it won't seem so jarring to switch to the liquid diet. I still think I'll be a bit cranky though 😜

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
