How much were you required to loose

Recommended Posts

Hi all I am wondering how much people were required to lose before surgery. I go to Kaiser in Fresno and I started at 296 and I am now at 275.5. I don't have my first meeting with the surgeon until 4-22-19. I have had to reschedule it due to other things that came up. I am hoping to try and have my surgery y June.

Our team did not have a specific amount they wanted us to lose. They just wanted to see a loss every month. One month I gained 7 pounds, and lost it the next month. Despite the gain, I was recommended for surgery, and approved by my insurance company.

My surgeon asked for a 10% loss... 27lbs for me. It wasn't a firm expectation, and when I was struggling, in part due to one of my diabetes meds, they helped me get in to see a specialist to make some changes.

Was required to lose 5% - but I can't remember if that was my surgeon's program or my insurance's requirement.

I wasn't required to lose any weight (which probably isn't a good policy... looking back I wish I had weighed a little less when I had it done).

I also had my surgery in Fresno. I wasn’t required to lose any prior to surgery but I lost anyway going through the required nutrition classes.

This. But def, ask your doc/RD for their rules and your insurance co's rules.

Was not required a specific amount, but insurance said cannot gain weight during the 6 month pre-surgery process. (Some insurance will not approve surgery if you go below a certain bmi w/o comorbidities - that was 40 bmi for mine, so I made sure I did not lose below that before final approval. That was right before the 10 day 800 cal/day preop diet - on that I lost below the 40 bmi)

No specific amount during my pre-op workup. They just didn't want to see any weight gain over my initial consultation weight. I ended up going up and down during the 6-month workup period, but didn't ever end up going above my first weight. I'm now a clinical reviewer for my hospital's weight-loss surgery program and have seen many cases where patients gain and gain and gain up to their surgery day, and they still get approval.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
