What's your best advice for preparing yourself for surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm having surgery May 20.

I am not sure what I should be doing besides making small strides in the food and exercise department.

How did you prepared yourself in the month approaching surgery??

Did you tell your family and friends? I've only told my side of the family. Not the in-laws.

Congratulations on your surgery date! I'm a newbie in that I'm only 8 days post surgery, but I have been blessed to have had an easy week. I think a lot of it is your mental mind set. I read alot about gastric bypass and knew what I was getting myself into. Everyone here on this support forum is super helpful, so read a lot of posts. Practice chewing well, get used to Protein Shakes, but don't stock up because your taste changes after surgery. Good luck!

How has the pain been? I know it's different for everyone. Thanks for responding. I just don't know what to do with myself.

Pain is not too bad now. I don't take anything during the day, but fond that at night I'm more sensitive to it, and I take one pain pill at bedtime. They kept up with the pain and nausea meds in the hospital so it wad ok then, too. I was in the hospital for 2 nights. During the time before the surgery I also bought things from Amazon like bariatric sized utensils, small, really small tupperware type containers, a food scale. The time will go quickly and you'll soon be on the losers bench!!

Is it like internal stomach pain or more like incision pain?

Internal pain, and gas pain. Pain when you move or twist. Not incision pain. I feel sooo much better 8 days out.

The first couple days are a little rough. For me personally I have a high tolerance for pain and I really choose mind over matter. If you don’t obsess about every little thing you feel and just go with it you’ll be fine. I’m two weeks out and I feel like nothing ever happened it’s really weird. Everybody is different and I know some people have not had as easy as a path. But when you expect the worst and hope for the best you can’t go wrong.

My biggest surgical Worry? That I would wake up to find out my Surgeon had backed out and refused to do my surgery. First thing I did when I was put in my Post- Surgery Room? Flipped my gown up to my chest to make sure I had my 6 little slits, actually I had 7, I had forgotten he also uses the navel as a portal. I hurt so subtly I was concerned very much! All was well then, the blips and bumps in my recovery came much later!

Just got home from the hospital... for me it felt like I'd done about a 1000 crunches. First swallows of Water burned going down, but now it's easy. Hiccups are a new kind of torture though.

I'm doing well. My left side is very very sore. Doc said it's normal, that's where the stomach came out.

I'm struggling to get my fluids in but I'm 3 days PO and just trying my best!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
