Fear of being hungry, and RNY success

Recommended Posts

So, does anyone else have a fear of feeling hungry? I realized recently that I tend to eat the moment I feel anything remotely like hunger! (I'm pre surgery. rny on March 27th!) Right now I'm lying in bed hungry and wanting to eat, but I know in a week I will be on the liver shrinking diet and I should just suck it up! I'm afraid I will mess up post-surgery since it seems I am always hungry!! Help.

I don't think I was always hungry but I just like to eat. It tastes good and when I'm bored it's an easy way to feel satisfied by something. I'm on my pre op liquid diet right now. I started it on the first. My surgery is on the 14th. For the 2 weeks before surgery I let myself eat what I wanted but I didn't let myself eat as much as I wanted. I tried at each meal to have one of my favorites but I ate in moderation and threw the rest away. I'm doing really well on the liquid diet with the exception of yesterday when I was off work and all I wanted to do was eat. I don't know if it's because I was bored or because my blood sugar was really low but I made my daughter nachos and I took a chip and I was licking it and it was really hard to stop myself from eating it but I did. I find myself being sad that there are certain foods my body might never tolerate again and the flip side is that I hope that happens. I worry that I'll get the wrong kind of pouch I've hears others talk about where they can tolerate everything and eat a bunch. So yes I do have that worry but I also know that this is not a fix. It's a tool. Also every person is different. I hope you don't feel this way post op.

I have had bypass.

I still get hungry.

I am, astonishingly, closing in on 200 pounds lost...that’s more than what I weigh.

You can feel hunger, eat, and still lose excess weight...promise.

I am terrified of being hungry!!! Heck, I have that thing where they look in your throat and I have to not eat for half a day (nothing after 7 the night before and nothing but Water that morning, and nothing at all 4 hours before....)

I am stressing over being so uncomfortable and miserable! I find hunger to be physically painful... I hate it!

That week of liver shrink?? I am wondering if they can please put me in a coma for it! (Lol)

I am also worried about being hungry after the surgery but unable to eat.

Yesterday I went hiking. I brought one of those Protein Drinks my dietitian told me to try. 5 hours after lunch but 2 hours before I got home I drank it and had a hand full of nuts... it kinda took the edge off but I was still definitely hungry! If that was the state of satiety I would be uncomfortable and unhappy.

I hate being hungry!

It really does make a difference post surgery, you go from being hungry like the wolf to being in control. Yes you might still get hungry. but it will be controllable. I now look at foods as Maybe I will taste a little of that, but you won't have the panic that you have to eat something before someone else gets it. And truly there are many foods, I can take a teeny taste and I say" Why did I used to eat that? It does not taste good enough to cheat with! " And you will find you don't have the desire to cheat, because in the long run it just isn't worth it. And since you have so little room inside, there is no room for junk, so you do want to eat the things that are Vitamin rich and good for you! I know of what I speak, I was a food Sinner for years and years and years, so when I saw the light, had a Come to Jesus moment, whatever title you feel comfortable with, I had a fair amount of BlubberWeight to get rid of, but I am now a 120 pounds lighter than my highest weight, lost 77 since surgery, yeah me , the tried every diet known to modern man, some of them siily, but I was grasping at straws, it really works even if you're 73 like me! My natural Basal Metabolic rate is akin to a seasick snail but it is working for me too. Oh occasionally I do get a little jealous of the losses of the young ones, but then I remember Life gave me a different answer sheet to what they were given, as long as I answer mine correctly I can't go wrong either!

I had gastric bypass. I was hoping I'd be one of the lucky one's to go a long time without feeling hunger but I wasn't that lucky. My hunger came back after about 4 weeks. It's different now though. I feel hunger, can eat a couple of bites of something and it's gone. It usually happens at work where I tend to go longer periods of time between meals and drinks. I now take a little bag of nuts in my pocket for those times. Sometimes I need them, sometimes I don't.

Do you mind if I ask which surgery you had and when you had your surgery?

Hunger is different after the surgery. It's more in control. It's not as strong.

I am *almost* 5 months out and in the past month have started getting my hunger sensation back. But it only takes a tiny amount of food to make it go away.

I had gastric bypass on 12/02/17.

My start weight at consult was 384, my surgery weight was 369.

I now weigh between 182-185. This was my surgeons goal, I may try for 175. I am 5’10” for reference.

I have gone from a 28 in pants and 4x in shirts to a 10/12 in pants and usually a medium now in tops.

I agree with above posters, I do get hungry but it takes much less to feel satiated and although I do still get cravings for things, it is easier to not eat those things now as I know they make me feel poorly, both physically and mentally.

I dunno, my hunger is the same as before. I'm about eight months out and I get SUPER hungry plenty of the time. Luckily I can often eat less to get rid of the hunger, but it's still definitely there.

I think my hunger is also VERY responsive to patterns. If I get into a pattern/habit of eating frequently/too much, then my hunger kicks into high gear at those times/all the time. I started intermittent fasting and am tracking with my fitness pal to help me get back on track (and bust up a two month plateau), so I'm hoping I can retrain both my physical and head hunger a bit!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
