Full from medication alone?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I had my RNYGP this past Monday, March 4th and it has been progressively difficult to tolerate liquid and Protein Shakes. I am supposed to take meds every couple of hours (liquid Oxycodone, crushed Tylenol, liquid Colace, vitamins) and I find myself getting so full from the meds that I can’t finish the medication regimen, let alone additional intake. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal? Thanks.

Yep, your new gut doesn't want you to put anything in there at this point in the recovery process. For the first few weeks I just focused on staying hydrated and slowly added more Protein as tolerated. It's the dehydration that gets you in trouble. I still don't eat much a few months out but I get all of my required Water, protein and supplements in. If you fill up on water and meds, you'll be fine. As time goes by, how much you can consume in a day will increase. Take it easy and don't force it so things can heal. That's what I'm doing.

Hi there! I’m just shy of 2 weeks post op from my RNY and I haven’t yet hit my target for liquid consumption. So I would say it’s totally normal as you heal that you find yourself full from meds. It’s only been within the last couple of days that I’ve been able to consume closer to 60 ounces of liquid.

Thank you both for the helpful replies. Nice to know that this is normal.

I’m 1 month sleeve to RNY. I’m having difficulty eating because I’m just not hungry. I have a small meal in the am with my Prevacid then sometimes go 36 hours no food. It’s not good! However, I’m just focusing on liquids and my Vitamins. Sip sip sip. It’s annoying but I just keep an open bottle next to me if I’m watching tv or lounging around. Eating and drinking enough is hard when you’re supposed to wait 30 min after eating to drink.

Also, I take about an hour to get all my medication down. I’m supposed to open or crush everything but it was disgusting. I take about 10 capsules at night and a couple pills. They definitely fill me up. Pouch is little.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
