Throwing up when brushing teeth

Recommended Posts

Does anyone gag/throw up a little when they brush their teeth? I do every time and Im getting the bypass next week and Im scared. Any suggestions on how to stop this?

I’m sorry I don’t have any suggestions but I do suffer from the same thing. I do notice that it only happens when I brush the inside of my teeth in the morning. If I brush them late morning or afternoon I don’t have any issues. The thought of not brushing my teeth first thing in the morning is grosser than dealing with trying to to gag tho!

Now that you mention it, it is not as bad in the afternoon for me as well. I think I can work around this. Thank you!!!

For me it's the taste of the toothpaste that makes me gag! So I bend over the counter with my head practically in the sink to stop any from getting to far back in my mouth lol

Maybe try a toothbrush with a smaller head? Like a kid’s brush might help?

Have you tried different toothpaste brands or flavors? I wonder if you’re more susceptible to this issue depending on chemical ingredients (e.g. sodium laurel sulfate, fluoride) or if the toothpaste is foamy?

I used to have this problem but haven't in years (since WAY before I had bypass surgery). I've used a SonicCare toothbrush for probably 6-8 years - so maybe that's made the difference (the brushes are pretty small)? I'm not sure - other than I never have that problem anymore.

I was like this my whole life. Oddly enough, it improved tremendously after surgery, I have no idea why.

The 2 have nothing to do with each other.

I am going to try a different toothpaste. If I brush my teeth with no toothpaste (to see if that was the issue) it wasn’t as bad. Thanks for the idea!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
