Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

Recommended Posts

Yesterday marked 8 months post-op for me. I can't believe how quickly time is flying! My post-op weight loss is pretty tame (55 pounds). I attribute it to being a slow loser, but also to falling off the wagon when some serious illnesses struck my family and I relied on my old pal food to get me through. I've been slowly getting back on track and my weight loss is really picking up again. Counting when I started my journey a little over a year ago, I'm down 92 pounds. It's pretty insane. I'm definitely getting "lazy" now that I'm super comfortable with my weight, I can do so many more things and I feel great. But I have about 35 more pounds to lose and would love to be at goal by my surgiversary. So I'm gonna make these next 4 months count!

Refocusing or Reclaiming your diet

For the Jan Challenge I hosted I decided to give up Protein Cookies and it rolled into the Feb Challenge too, but I keep the box around for after.

Well I gave them away. I don't plan to repurchase again because really I don't need it. Anyone else becoming *more* diligent to stave off regain/poor habits? Or Nah...

I am having a really crappy night, and I’m trying not to beat myself up and to just really take care of myself. I am in the process of separating/divorcing, and although Valentine’s Day was never that big a thing for us as a couple, today is hitting me really hard. I am just one solid ball of anxiety and sadness right now, I canceled my personal training session because I just want to be home and in a ball and eating all the pizza and chocolate. I feel like an idiot for canceling it because I know that working out would make me feel better, but I just can’t get into a head space to be up for that right now.

I need to remind myself that this is a pretty uniquely hard time for me, and just because I’m not working out when I’m going through this doesn’t mean I’m going to not work out regularly when things are normal… Right?

Exactly. What an amazingly difficult situation you’re in! Don’t be too hard on yourself. Giving yourself a chance to work through and process your feelings might be just what you need!

Good luck!

Thanks for the support!

I am trying to focus on being proud of myself for not ordering pizza/going the emotional eating route. I ate what I’d planned to eat and then went to bed at 8:30. Here’s to hopefully going to the gym this weekend!

Also trying to refocus on the fact that my last weigh in was 202.2. That means I’m less than three pounds away from being under 200 for the first time since middle school!!!!

I'm so sorry you're going through a rough time. But focus on what you're doing right. Not falling back into emotional eating is a huge win! You're doing great. Leave room for the human moments and be kinder to yourself, especially right now.

Wow! Hitting onderland will be an amazing high!

My plateau/stall has finally started to give way. I’d been hovering at 228 for the previous month or two. However, the last week it started creeping down again and now I’m at 223. Once I break 220 I will be the smallest I’ve ever been as an adult. I’ve got 5 months to hit my team’s goal of onederland before my year anniversary.

I’m so excited about your plateau breaking! And you and I had similar benchmarks - 217 was the smallest I’d ever been as an adult (after an entire summer of being a counselor at a weight loss camp). It was so exciting once I cleared that hurdle! It’s also when I cut my hair off because that summer was when I originally did the short hair thing and I’d always told myself if I ever got to 217 again I’d do it!

I’ve been moving from plateau to plateau. I was 216-213 for a month and a half and then magically I dropped to 205-203 over the next month, and now I have a feeling I’ll be here for a bit (I weighed in at 204 this morning). If I can somehow get to 199 before my birthday (3/6) that’d be amazing, but it’s starting to feel unlikely...we shall see!

Thank you again for your support, and sorry for dragging this thread into a self-indulgent pity party for a bit!!

I fall into the “nah” category, though I don’t see that as particularly noble...

One thing I have started doing is keeping a list on my phone of stuff I don’t actually like anymore. My brain says I like it, but then my taste buds say no. Like during last week’s snow/ice storm when I thought “ah, might as well buy a slice of banana bread for later, since I won’t want to leave the house...” Not a good decision in the first place (see “nah”), but on top of that pretty much ANY baked good purchased in a store is now way too sweet for me. Homemade is a different story, but restaurant baked goods go on my “you don’t actually like this anymore” list.

This plateau has lasted for almost 2 months though, so I may have to power through the “nah”s and get a lot more strict, just to change up the tempo.

Hey, this thread is here for all the ups and downs! You weren’t self-indulgent at all, you were justifiably low. Glad you’re feeling more upbeat.

Did anyone have just Tramadol for pain after surgery? I've got to get my gallbladder out in about 10 days (the day after my 1-yr surgiversary for sleeve) and the dr. seems pretty adamant that he doesn't want to prescribe oxycodone, which is what I had for my 2 weight-loss surgeries. This has me pretty nervous. I'm not shopping for pain meds, the only 2 times I've had a prescription for oxycodone was my other surgeries, so I don't know why he's so nervous about it. He's willing to prescribe hydrocodone, but I can't take it. Any advice is welcome!

I did as I could not tolerate many other pain meds. It worked for me.

My perfect "cocktail" once they stopped the pain pump was:

IV Tylenol >> liquid tylenol at home

Gabapentine

Tramadol

Supposedly the combination of those 3 are synergistic and provide similar level of relief as narcotics. They worked for me. And I didn't have any other big guns after about mid afternoon of the day of surgery. I weaned off them pretty quickly at home and if I needed anything, just took liquid tylenol.

Hope your surgery goes smoothly and precisely and that you're up and healing in no time at all!!! ((hugs)) Sending healing prayers your way!

I have no idea what I had in the hospital, but since this is day surgery, I'm sure it won't be what I had before. I'm just afraid that I won't be able to sleep for several days since I'm already up 5-6 times a night. (Saturday night, I gave up and watched Murder, She Wrote reruns at 3 in the morning. UGH! (That's what I used the oxy for before-not during the day, just at night.)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
