Lap-Band in Upstate NY

Recommended Posts

Gosh I know where all those towns are. My sister lives in Williamson. She had the bypass YEARS ago. She failed miserably. She lost 240 pounds in 18 months, then proceeded to gain it back. She weighs more than I do now. Anyway, she's mad at me because I chose the band. I think the band is a better fit for my personality. I need that monthly (initially) check in with my dr. The monitoring with the dietitian. My dr's offices require a lot of visits the first year, the second year it's 4 times a year, and it stays that way for a while. I can deal with that. She literally had 5 post op visits, and most of them were the first 3 months post op. I'll have that many before Christmas at this rate.

I'm down a total of 12 pounds in 2 weeks. I'm starting to really deal with hunger issues though. I'm looking forward to getting in some exercise. Walking here has been difficult, as it's been horribly wet or cold and I have two two yr olds that I have to take with me walking. The twin stroller died, so I don't have one.

I'm ordering this morning a recombant stationary bike. It should be here in a few days.

Heather, I checked out those pictures from Barktoberfest, cute dogs, I believe the bigger one is a pug?? My sister has 2 pugs, both fawns, she wants to get a black one next. They are the noisiest things when they are sleeping! They snore like my hubby. I am such a dog lover, we have 2, a golden that is 11 and a shit-zu poodle mix that is almost a year old. They are best buddies. My daughter owns her own dog grooming shop in Fairport, I am there occasionally and always see a dog I want to bring home!

I did the same thing Barb when I was growing up, lived with my parents until I got married. My son just moved out at 24 and my 26 year old daughter still lives with us. She wants out so bad (no we are not difficult to live with!!) she just needs to be on her own, she is working hard on becoming independent. Unless you are making lots of money todays financial situations make it difficult for anyone to live on their own.

Terri, thats a good weightloss for two weeks. I know what you mean about the hunger though, I had my first fill almost 3 weeks ago now and I am struggling with hunger again as I was 2 weeks post op. I have to call them for a fill, but I am working on increasing my Protein. Thanks to Gilta's help, I think my protein might be low, which would cause the hunger, I am going to try to increase protein for a few days, if that doesn't help I will call for a fill. Enjoy your day everyone, are we ever gonna see that sunshine again?:cursing:

Holy cow! I really can't get over how the weight just drops off!:cool2:

I am 8 days out and have lost 11 lbs so far! This is great! I start pureed foods today so I'm looking forward to some chicken!!! Any suggestions on some items that taste good pureed?

The start of puree's for me slowed down my weight loss. I'm still loosing just VERY Slowly now. I'm down 3 pounds in a week. As opposed to 9 the week before. So I'll say that... I freaked thinking something was wrong with me.

My first meal puree'd was chicken slow cooked in cut up stewed tomatoes, for 4 hours, and mashed potatoes. It actually was good.

The other "favorite" for me on the mushies is scrammbled eggs, and cheese (fat free).

Teri -

I had a friend who also had the bypass and is at a stand still after 1 year. She lost 105 lbs in the first year, but still has another 70 to go. She wishes now she had the band as she does not know what to do.

Congrats on the weightloss! I remember those early days watching the scale drop every day. It does slow down and that is where I am at right now. I have only lost 4 lbs in the past month and 3 of them were in the first week so nothing in the last 2!

Carol -

How did the Protein increase go? Did it help? I was having a bit of a problem with hunger in the am, so I tried turkey sausage this am. I will let you know if that works!

Melody -

Wow - great job on the loss! I did not puree my meats, I just ate really slow and chewed the heck out of it. My first meal was grilled sea bass and it was wonderful. I only had 2 oz, but loved it. The fish is very soft so you don't have to puree it. I also used canned chicken, but ate it very slow and chewed, chewed and chewed some more. Let us know how it goes.

Barbie - Which Sephora do you work at?

Heather - Loved the pics!

I ended up calling for a fill as I have only lost a few pounds in a month and not losing anymore. I hope the fill helps. I have had pain in my port site the past few days. I heard when you get your period that happens, so maybe that is it.

Hope all is well.

Please let me know how your fill goes. Mine was pushed back until November 4th. Then the second is scheduled at this point for December 3rd. I'm wishing it could be done already.

I've spent so much time coughing and sneezing these last two weeks. The dr said that, coupled with carrying Matthew around, caused some pulled muscles on my right side. It is really bothering me today. I took a pain pill for it last night, and will have to again tonight. Even with the pill last night, i slept maybe 3 hours in bits and pieces. :)

Always good to see you posting Gilta.

oh yeah, that's totally why i'm still home...i have technically 4 jobs (daycare, sephora, and I teach 2 colorguards) and I still don't have enough to be on my own...plus my parents love when I'm here. :) My brother still lives here too. he's26 now...we would both like to move out but financially it's just so tough! And there's no way we could move in together...not happening! lol

I have a pug too! How funny..yes they snore but you get used to it when it's your own dog. It actually starts putting YOU to sleep! really...I also have a Bit Bull...she's the sweetest thing in the world! They get such a bad rap and it's completely unfair. Any dog you TRAIN to fight will fight, you know? She's such a baby! (at 11 years old)

The only Sephora in the area is in Eastview Mall. Buffalo does have one but honestly, I've had so many people come in and say they've had a bad experience there with the people not knowing what they're talking about OR just not being nice. I've only been there once when they first opened so I can't say if its true or not..but we're awesome at Easteview!

Teri, hope you get some rest tonight!

Terri---so sorry you are in pain and not sleeping! Hope you feel better soon.

Gilta--I did try and increase Protein, I have not been as hungry but I think my new job keeps me a lot busier and keeps my mind off my stomach. I am definately feeling hunger though and not head hunger, I feel it at work and just go and drink some Water or I grab a snack if it's time for a small bite to eat. I have been bringing some cheese and some hummis to work, it helps.

I called the office for a fill....oh, can't get in until mid November! How do they expect this to work if we can't get a fill appt. for 6 weeks?

I also have watched the scale stop moving, I am actually playing with the same 3 pounds going up and down. So frustrating. Not sure what I am going to do about an appt. I hung up on them I was so mad:cursing:

Anyway, hope everyone has a great weekend! Hope it is rain free.

My first fill got bumped until the first week of november. I'm upset about it, but not much I can do. My dr's have a call and get in fill list, when they can. Usually once you're fully healed it's within a week or so to get in for a fill. I've seen it with my friends from group.

Wow -

Sounds like a bunch of frsutration this week....is everyone staying full with Protein supplements? Are you using nectar? I have to go buy some as the supplement I orignally bought doesn't taste good to me and I hear good things about Nectar. If you are using it - what flavors do you recommend?

The office was having problems getting me in for my follow-up appt and ended up just sending me the next menu as they didn't want to make me wait. My first fill will be November 13th (I think). In the meantime, I think I can make it through these pureed and soft menus.

I went to the casino this weekend and at one point a very large woman sat down next to me and inhaled a juicy cheeseburger. I have to admit - it smelled WONDERFUL - but I also realized I viewed the world with different glasses now....I see people doing horrible things to their bodies and wonder why I never saw that for myself. In the end, I had to leave my machine (that was hitting well too I must say) just to get away from the disgust I was feeling.

I don't want this feeling of disgust to last as I want to have empathy for those that struggle as I have - but I think my disgust may have actually been my own disgust with previous behaviors and I was projecting them on her. What a very emotional moment for me....who would have thought it would have came at a casino!?!?

Anyway - I'm getting by - the weight has slowed down - but I'm still hopeful at this point. 11 days out - 12.5 down since surgery, 32.5 overall.

Hope your week goes better ladies - remember....we want this - we need this - WE CAN DO THIS!!!

I will be away most of this week. Please don't worry about me. My youngest sons (the twins) are going with me to Albany NY, for surgery on the older twin. He has hemophilia. He is having a port a cath put in, so I can treat him at home.

Hi! I am starting the procdure for the Lap Band in Rochester NY. I was wondering if someone can tell me how long it takes from start to finish. I am looking to have it done by Jan or March at the lastest. I have gotten in really quick for my Semiar. I have heard many different things from 6 wks to 1 year. I know that it also depends on your insurance. Please someone help!

Hi,

Oh boy has it been a frustrating week for everyone! I go on Friday for my fill, my first one. I will let you know how it goes.

Teri - sorry about the issues.

Carol - let me know if you get through to his secretary. that is really frustrating.

Melody - I have not heard of nectar, what is that?

Barbie - I had TOM this week as well and the same thing happens to me.

mmich - welcome to the group! I have BC/BS. I went to Highland's information meeting Dec 07. I had my first appt in January. I had my surgery 8/1/08, so it took me about 8 months to go through everything. I had to lose 5% before they would qualify me for insurance.

Feel free to ask us any questions - we probably have asked them too!

Gilta

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
