I thought I was prepared. I tried a bunch of shakes pre-surgery and found that Premier RTD was the most palatable, and almost good when mixed in coffee. All of the other shakes were gag inducing after one sip, and that was pre-op. Well, I moved from clears to full liquid yesterday and I nearly puked trying to choke down 2oz. of Premier...and I bought so many of them! I know it isn't a great option but this morning I used some Carnation Instant Breakfast (the sugar free kind) in the higher Protein Fairlife milk and I was able to get down half (4oz.) because it was a lot less sweet. 4oz. of this combo has 9 grams of protein, which isn't a whole lot but I figured it was better than no protein at all. It took me 40 minutes to drink and that was with great effort and a lot of disturbing gurgling. Maybe I can add some unflavored whey to it to boost the protein. I knew to expect that tolerance for sweets would change (and that was part of the reason I wanted to get sleeved) but I was shocked that it happened immediately. Sugar free Jell-O, which I really liked before, is positively disgusting to me now. In an attempt to get rid of the dead raccoon taste in my mouth I took a sugar free mint and had to spit it out. This is a good thing, but not in the liquid phase when shakes are so important.

After surgery your taste buds change. So the Protein Shakes that are acceptable pre-op can be quite awful post-op. The key is experimentation. There are a lot of formulas for Protein shakes and you need to find the right one. Remember this is only temporary. As your meal volume increases over time, you can offload the shakes for the protein you obtain in meals.

Thin out the Protein Drinks with Fairlife Milk. Or as others mention, mix with coffee and tea, make frappacinos out of them.

Love bananas and cream in coffee and also love chocolate with SF peppermint Torani for holiday coffee, also vanilla or the caramel with sf pumpkin spice torani is remarkable!

Oh, I also love the Isopure Protein powders: unflavored, dutch chocolate, vanilla (ice cream?), bananas and cream. Then I use something like coffee or tea or even Fairlife FF milk as the liquid. Now that I don't need so much Liquid Protein, I just use almond milk with it to make green smoothies or matcha or green tea or celestial seasonings tea or decaff.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I liked PP in coffee pre-op, but my stomach is so sensitive that I'm afraid to try something as acidic as coffee just yet, even though Decaf is supposed to be ok. I'm going to try thinning out the PP with Fairlife milk as Fluffy suggested. Thanks, everyone.

I've recently switched to a low acid coffee, still decent with caramel PP. I use the peach flavor in tea, amazing. I took some time for me to adjust to the flavor also but once I did, it became pattern. Stick it out if you can.

Also, you can start by only adding 2oz to your cup of anything. Love Tea's idea of low acid coffee!!!! I drink Decaf, so start with 2oz which will make it very light tasting. Also vary the heat of your coffee!!! If you need it lukewarm or cold, doooo eeettt. Anything to find something that works for you for now.

But if none work, then use Fairlife Milk + a 1/8 to 1/4 cup Greek yogurt, some frozen fruit and maybe even frozen spinach blended to smithereeens...and thinned down with Fairlife to the consistency you need.

Thanks! This sounds like a good idea. Can we add fruit to shakes? I imagine it would be ok unless it has small seeds like strawberries.

Thanks! Even if it doesn't come in decaf that brand will come in handy in a month or two!

I only used frozen blueberries or frozen peaches until I was cleared for all foods to include seeds. But in a pinch, you could always run it through a strainer and press it through while keeping the strained "liquid" and ditching any seeds.

I also had this issue and even almost 10 weeks out and I can NOT stomach any "artificial protein". After telling my surgeon this at my week post op apt he started having me make my own Protein Shakes. And till this day I eat my protein. I don't supplement at all and can get all of what I need in. Plus knowing what is going into my body really means a lot now.

My taste buds totally changed after surgery. And that yucky taste in your mouth will go away as you start to eat real food again. I struggled with that too.

The unflavored protein was the WORST!

Look up my surgeon on YouTube , Dr. Matthew Weiner. He goes over the set point smoothies and you can get your protein in the natural way. They go down a lot easier and they aren't as heavy in your tummy.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
