Speaking only for myself, the only thing 1 small Reese cup would do is make me want MORE and since there are quite a few in the bag I think this is a recipe for disaster at any stage of this process. I just can not keep anything like that around because I know myself --I would DREAM about that bag in the pantry and likely get up one or more times every night to have additional pieces. That brief "joy and satisfaction" would result in my feeling like a loser and a failure.

That is so me, too! If I were any good at moderation, I wouldn't have needed surgery. I applaud those who can, but I'm not one of them.

Very true! Perhaps the OP should look closely at their pre op habits to gain better understanding on the likely outcome of their post op habits (they don't change instantly) sometimes you will still struggle with the same issues after surgery

Color me this, too. I don't even have a sweet tooth, but if contraband that is irresistible is in the house (salty/crunchy), there is no willpower in the world to keep me from rationalizing my "need" to consume it. And like you guys, I'm def not a saint, so when I stray I make sure to do it out of the home and when we get home it's right back to TCB (takin' care of business) and knuckling back to the primary game plan. It's the only way I can function.

I have had a very small amount of candy a few times in the last 6 months only when we were away from home....a tiny bite of my husband's fudge from the fudge store on vacation or a couple of his peanut M&Ms on a road trip stop. I did experiment with a few Quest and ONE bars but these for me are no different than candy and they can not be available to me on a daily basis. If I could control my intake of things like this I probably would not have needed WLS.

If I am really jonesing for something sweet, I make a cup of coffee with some Premier Protein Caramel shake and a shot of sugar free DaVinci Syrup. Sip this slowly and it does satisfy me by the time I finish with it. I sometimes go in my bedroom and try on clothes that fit that used to be way too small while I drink it. It works for me.

I do not plan on keeping the regular ones in the house. I def CANNOT overeat more than 1 of the sugar free RP cups per day. Its good to know your thoughts and I like your ideas of a treat, but I'm not a coffee drinker and the Premier shakes I'm grossed out with. I have noticed that I really am not craving it, and I do not believe that if I decide to have 1 sugar free RP cup/day, that will cause my demise. I understand your concern about the reg. ones, but I know even if I had them in the house I no longer want to eat the whole bag, which that part of this I am excited about. but I won't keep em just in case, lol thanks for the advice

Maaaybee we shouldn't assume that this thread is about anything more than "Do you have a treat, what is it, and how often." I feel like some people really want to make it more than that and be incredibly self righteous. It would be really nice for all of us here to stop being that way. Stop judging; people do not need to be crucified for having a different way, even if you do not agree, and maybe, just maaybee, a very small amout of chocolate is what helps certain people not go off in the deep end. Who knows? I do not claim to know what works for you, or anybody else, but thanks for your thoughts!

Yeah, well if that's what this is all about, @Matt Z beat you to it a few 1000 page views ago. It's a hilarious and terrifying read. :)

In my mandatory pre op group meeting the nutritionist said something that made a lot of sense later on post op. When you get WLS you can wipe your food choices slate clean. You can now decide what foods you want to introduce into your new food universe. If ice cream or candy contributed to you being obese then you can make the choice of not introduce them back into your food universe. I take that advice to heart and did an inventory of the foods that I can do without and found that candy, ice cream as well as processed foods, fast foods and sugary drinks lead me to be not just obese but morbidly obese. For the sake of my health I can't introduce these things into my new food universe. (Not even in moderation) Not mention that I am a compulsive overeater and these foods will trigger me into eating other bad foods and will eventually get me to eat badly again.

Everyone has their own take on what will make them successful post surgery but for me, I can't introduce these things into my new food universe. I have a hard time enough working on maintaining my weight loss and keeping my health, I don't need to repeat past behaviors that I know will only harm me. Food for thought (Excuse the Pun)

I don't think you have broken up with food yet. You are approaching wanting the treat for the 'high', that soothing feeling you get when the creamy goodness hits the back of your tongue and mmmmm you swoon.

Food rewards are a mindset you need to let go of, find a substitute that is not food now while it is 'easy' to follow the rules. I know you think we are being harsh....really we aren't trying to be mean or Nazis - we are in your corner. Hell we are IN the ring beside you fighting for ourselves and YOU cheering you on ALL the way!!! There will be all the time in the world to introduce that stuff into your plan, but there is only this window early on where it is easy to restrict and frankly if you do treats now you will lose weight, no issue so you think hey this surgery works, huh I CAN have treats and I'm losing weight. Yep. Then you will think that your plan will be how it works for all eternity. The mind can be the real Nazi.....lies lies lies it lies, it rationalizes. Trust us, we have been down that road you just got on....

Hang in there, cultivate some hobbies that keep you busy. Everyday isn't your birthday.

My two cents.

People comment on posts out of concern. I think it's important to see all sides and opinions. Choose what is useful and ignore anything that may offend you.

The bariatricpal community has seen it all. You will see people posting I can eat whatever I want and lose weight. I ate XYZ and I am gaining what do I do now. People asking permission to eat XYZ, Others admit they have gone off plan and are looking to get back on track. I heard from a friend of a friend that you can eat a potato chip diet...--Ugh

Posters will give you perspective and things to think about. Not all of us will come across as warm and fuzzy.

Yes it is! :D Ya pretty much sure I didn't get this to treat everyday like my birthday or come even within a thousand miles close to it ;-) and pretty sure a sugar free RP cup would not give me that "its my birfday" feeling even if taken everyday. And pretty sure I won't screw this up like some of you might think because I shared these thoughts, which are not even actions yet as I am following my post op phase of the diet faithfully, and if people really want to help other people here, they will try hard not patronize any one of us for sharing our thoughts. not a single one. Thanks!

ON a FB support page I'm on there was a recent post from someone who was 4 weeks out and she was at Maccas and wanted to know if there was anything that it was ok for her to eat...............

Needless to say that ended up in an "argument" similar to this one. What worried me most were the people that seemed to be enabling her and telling the people that had told her it wasn't a good choice to mind their own business, we were all fat once, no one is a saint etc

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
