Is there such a thing as losing weight too fast?

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this sounds dumb Two weeks ago when I had a consultation with my surgeon and her team I was told that I didn't need an adjustment since I was dropping more then 2 pounds a week. Which was kind of scary to hear since I find myself becoming hungrier. I think that part of the reason why I am dropping weight faster then the 2 pound recommended weight is because I have so much weight to lose 170 lbs to my personal goal 200 lbs to the goal the surgeon would like to see me at. The other reason is because I have been following the dieticians guidelines to a T and doing my best to exercise 30 mins 3 times a week.

Am I doing any real damage to my health ? I know that when I hit a plateau it's going to be very frustrating.

Lisa - - sounds like you are doing great, really working with the band. If I were you I would tell the Dr. that you are using a lot of willpower to lose the weight and that you need a fill. You really can't lose weight too fast according to my Dr. and I am sure you are not doing anything to damage your health. Those on Gastric Bypass lose it very fast with no ill effects. Your Dr. probably thinks you are getting good restriction since you are losing so well. That probably is not the case since you are hungry. That hunger could lead to over eating some time when you are stressed and your will power is low. Keep up the good work!

You are doing fantastik! It is really hard to follow all the rules. If you tell your Doctor that your hunger is there and you do not feel as if you have any restriction they will prob do a fill. Keep up the good work. You have awsome will power!!!

As long as you're eating enough Protein to maintain your lean body mass and enough fruits and veggies to get in the Vitamins and minerals you need, there's no such thing as losing too fast. My view, my surgeon's view and my PS's view is that you can't lose too fast as long as your nutritional needs are being met (can be done with about 800 cals if you make perfect food choices). Some medical professionals will tell you otherwise, but (for what it's worth) I disagree. Getting the weight off is what's healthy. Your skin will "catch up" to the extent it's going to at all, and that's the only worry, if your nutrition is being met.

I'm with the others. Communicate to your doctor that it doesn't make sense to make you "lose" your will power in order to "deserve" a fill. Your weight loss should be commended, not punished.

Thank you all for your advice and compliments

Julie I was actually thinking about switching to Dr Fielding @ NYU

I've heard really great things. Do you know if he does fills for other dr's patients?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
