Glucose Challenge Test alternative

Recommended Posts

I’m currently pregnant and my OBGYN is clueless on how to care for patients who have had Bariatric Surgery.. she wants me to do a glucose challenge test to check for gestational diabetes. I’m supposed to drink 75grams of glucose.. obviously it will cause me dumping syndrome. She didn’t know what dumping syndrome is and asked me to look for an alternative because the HbA1C wouldn’t give her a clear indication of gestational diabetes. Anyone with experience here?

Tell them if you don't display any obvious signs you'll skip that testing , if there develops a risk, you'll keep them posted.

Honestly, they should be looking for the alternative. That's what medical training and degrees usually indicate their ability to do...

I'm currently pregnant also. I'm almost 13 weeks. My obgyn has me checking my blood sugar with a glucose meter 4x a day for two weeks to check for gestational diabetes. My obgyn also sent me to a diabetes education class to learn how to use the glucose meter and also what foods to eat. Maybe mention this to your obgyn as a possible option for you. You may also want to find an obgyn that has more experience with treating bariatric patients. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy 😊

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
