Birth Control options (Nuva Ring?)

Recommended Posts

It's the best BC in the world. I got on it about a month after the FDA approved it, so around 6 years. I'll never go on any other form of birth control again. No side effects, no forgetting pills, no break through bleeding (a v. big problem for me) and I didn't gain weight on it. I can't say enough good things about it.

when you take a birth control pill, you can get pregnant if you do not take it at the same time everyday..lol, chances are still low, but even the timing of the pill everyday influences the effectives. by the way, i have a friend that uses the nuvaring and she has no problems with it whatsoever. do not be afraid by my infections that i got, i think i am just super sensitive anyways. also, toward the end of using the nuvaring i became sexually active. we would have the rough stuff and everything, it never came out and the only way that he could feel it was if he was using his hand (which didn't happen cuz, i don't like it).

I just wanted to add that BC pills aren't as effective if you weigh over 200 lbs (which I think most of us do) and I have had a few friends who were plus sized get pregnant while taking the pill, even though they were following the dosage instructions properly so I think it is something to consider.

I have a non hormonal Paragard IUD that I love. It can stay in for up to 10 years but dh and I want to try for baby number 2 in 2009. My dr. said that the Paragurd IUD can be used on women who have given birth and those who haven't since they just dilate you when placing it.

ParaGard Homepage

I've only known one person who used the ring, and she had nasty hormonal effects from it depression etc. But then again she had the same reactions to the pill.

Before I found my current dr's practice I had gone to a horrible gyn who wouldn't stop talking about my weight and how fat and unhealthy I was ( mind you I weighed 100 lbs less then I did when I went for LBS) finding a wonderful dr is key to your health, and finding a dr who will go over all of your options with you.

Goodluck to you

The refridgeration thing is lovely when you have company, especailly parents over! I keep it in the butter compartment so noone will have to ask about it.

The refrigeration thing is odd -- I suppose it keeps the hormones fresh or something. It wasn't really an issue unless I was going to be out of town on the day that I needed to insert a new one - I went to Europe last fall and that's when I changed back to the pill because my day 1 was going to be during the trip and there was no way I could keep the damn thing cold for the flight over, while I was there, etc.

What lengths we ladies go through to avoid pregnancy! When are they going to come out with some BC for men, eh?

Hah hah, I am on BC to regulate my periods, but my hope is that when I lose weight, it will help itself.. and the actual birth control aspect is a bonus. If I didn't need to take it for periods, I'd probably do something else, just to keep from any risks associated with BC in general.

I had a gyno in NM that was a real pushy lady about my weight.

When I complained about my mood swings and horrible PMS, she wouldn't suggest different meds, or anything.. her answer was 'Stop eating sugar, sugar is the cause of all your problems'.

And of course, always harping me to lose weight, I hated goin to her. I knew she was down there judging my fat hooty ha.

My gyno now did not say anything about me being overweight, she's smart enough to know.. FAT PEOPLE KNOW THEY ARE FAT. FAT PEOPLE KNOW THEY SHOULD LOSE WEIGHT.

She doesn't know about my band, I see her next month.. Hope she notices the 60lb loss! :P

I think that's another reason I'm kind of scared to find a gyno. I've heard too many horror stories of doctors being jerks about weight. I didn't even want to go to an OB, but I went because it wasn't just about my life at that point. I think she's a regular gyno, too, but there's no way I'm going back to that office after they called and congratulated me for having a positive pregnancy test after I had miscarried (the draw was to make sure the numbers were going down).

I will bite the bullet after the band, though. :paranoid

Steph - I've had a LOT of negative run-ins with docs over my weight. I've learned that when I have to go to a new one, I mention my weight pu front...as in:

"I know I'm severly overweight, and I know all the risks associated with it. I am working on it and that's all I know to do, is my best."

I've found that it has helped my relationships with the past 4 doctors I've had. I also made a resolution to ax any docotor that is rude or hounding about my weight. I refuse for them to be rude to me about something I'm doing my best to remedy! I'm paying them, therefore they should treat me with respect. I also don't have a problem letting them know they need to work on their bedside manner if they get damning on me!

Nuvaring literally made me sick. I fell in the low percentage chance of side effects. One side effect is Lung infection... I don't know how, but once it was out... after about a week or so i was better. It was the weirdest thing EVER! It also made me VERY dry.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
