I've been lurking around here for a while, but now that I have my date (Sept 12, 2018) Its time to get down to business!!! I'm excited and scared to death too. From post surgery experience, how soon after surgery can I hope to be off diabetes medicine?

That's going to depend on how bad your diabetes is and all the factors that are unique to you. I've heard some folks talk about being off medication much quicker than they expected, I've heard some that still have to take it, just in reduced forms.

Go into your surgery optimistic about everything. Just remember every person is different, from what I read on here many can do,it almost instantly, some still some meds . Back in the old days people thought Diabetes was a single disease it isn't and every day new facets uncover. I am not diabetic, one of the reasons I'm going forth with surgery. Many family members are, but none of them have same dodages, and it effects them in different ways . Some are brittle, some it hardly affects at all. A couple type 2 control with diet alone.
Trust your endocrinologist, trust your primary care, trust your surgeon, those 3 know you best, Sorry we can't give certainties but I believe your surgery, willl benefit you that way.

Congrats on getting your date! For me it was a combination of so much excitement and a lot of nerves when the theoretical finally became practical by getting a date. Just keep reminding yourself why you're doing this, what you want to do/try and how you want to feel 3/6/12 months after surgery - I found that to be a very useful practice when I got stressed!

Hon, it will be okay. There will be very nice people in the October group, just like there are in the August and September ones. And someday when we are old grizzled veterans it won't matter who had theirs first. It gives you a little more time to get you and your affairs in order. I felt the same way when the June and July people passed me by, I made some really good friends in the JULY group and it really stung when they got their surgeries and I didn't. But most of them still remained friendly, mercmerc just started going back to the gym, maybe someday I will get to also. Just lean yourself back, smile and know that will work out okay. At least you know it still will happen, they could have said NEVER, had that happen to me, took a while to recover. Now give me that Queenly Smile and a wave of your hand!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
