I have had severe siatica in my left leg and have been taking Gabapentin (Neurotin) for 2 years. It controls the pain and tingling in my leg but I’m left with significant loss of strength in my leg.

The neurosurgeon won’t do surgery until I’m down to 250. I just had a sleeve 10 days ago. He thinks that significant weight loss may resolve the whole situation and thus need for surgery.

Anyone else had their similar situation be fixed by their weight loss?

I've had that pain twice in my life. Once from weight gain. Second time from stress.

First time from added weight from pregnancy. Went away after I lost the preg weight gain.
2nd time I was very stressed. Work and home. Missed my parents, had not seen them in four years. They came to visit and I was very happy to see them. The pain disappeared the 2nd day of their stay.

I would bet that you have an excellent chance of the pain going away after your weight loss.

I had something similar - not sciatica, but meralgia paresthetica. It too is a pinched nerve - a femoral nerve that when compressed causes tingling, burning and numbness in your outer thigh. I've lost 54 pounds since surgery on 2/28/18 and this condition has all but disappeared. Truly amazing. I bet your condition will be, at the very least, alleviated in the coming months. I've got my fingers crossed for you!

This could actually get worse for a little bit. The reason for that is due to visceral fat reduction causing more pressure on joints, nerves, tendons, etc. It should resolve as your body adjusts to the lower body fat, but it seems lots of people don't understand that fat isn't just external, it's around all of our organs, muscles, etc and it protects and lubricates those components. So, as the buffer around your muscles, joints, nerves, etc starts to reduce, you might notice some increased pain until things sort themselves out. I know I'm still working through some hip issues myself due to the weight loss.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
