Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion

Recommended Posts

I’m so broke right now, so I’m considering instead of jointing a gym at 6 weeks maybe I should join yoga glo or something. I have some room in my bedroom and my own yoga mat and at 6 weeks I want to start that for a month or so. See how that goes. Then join my kickboxing gym as soon as my surgeon approves

Ellie im 19 days out and lost 21.8 lbs between surgery and today. I’ve lost 31.8 total since my pre op started.

That’s incredible, I wish my body would do that too, but alas, not my story :(

Yes but I have not lost in about 2-3 weeks so it's hard for me!! I'm just going to try to change up my eating and exercise don't worry we're eating totally different than before Our body has to loose weight

How many carbs per serving are too much? Saw something with 14g of carbs but 8g Protein and only 1g sugar?? Not sure if that’s acceptable or not. Idk I might put it off for now.
How much Fiber? I try to keep my carbs per meal less than 10 net carbs. Keeping my daily no more than 40 actual carbs per day. I avg at about 27 net carbs

Make sure you are meeting your Protein & Water goals. Don't fret about the stall, you got this.

I was focusing on Water. At a week post op I was so dehydrated. I wasn’t able to drink much water. So instead of taking protien drinks I was trying to just get my water in. I’m doing better now and am not as dehydrated I’m still working on it.

Yes carbs will cause weight to not come off. When carbs are processed they turn to glucose in our blood and if you don’t drop enough insulin it’s stored for later. Go get fat sick and nearly dead. It’s seriously a great documentary. It puts SAD in perspective.

I’ve been stalled for about 5 days. I’m only 17 days post op. Not worried though I lost 17 lbs in those first 12 days so I’m just sticking to plan, focusing on Protein and fluids, and being patient
That's all you can do. I've stalled as well, right after my 2 week post op. I'm down 10lbs from surgery, 25 from pre op. I'm not worried. Gained 2, down 1 of those two.

I actually encountered my first true restriction yesterday and it taught me a valuable lesson. I'm just going to follow my plan and I know it will come off. The slower the better because it will last longer. I didn't gain my weight overnight, can't expect a surgery to be the miracle to remove overnight. It takes time and work. My "tool" will teach me to live a healthier life style.

We have this!

So I had 3 grams of fiber yesterday (not surprising since my diet doesn’t have much in the way of veggies in it yet. But I had 60 grams of protien and 32 grams of carbs. That’s a good amount. I also hit my Water goal.

After reviewing it I know I don’t have to add the protien powder (yay!!) since I’m doing good on that.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
