Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion

Recommended Posts

I made pizza for dinner. 2 slices according to my fitness pal only have 300 calories, and 18 grams of protien. It’s got 40 grams of carbs but the whole thing was made from scratch (dough, sauce and all) I ate 1 slice. Tomorrow is payday so I get to go stock up on things that are better for me again since I’m out. I didn’t love my pizza... it was just bleh... some of the foods I used to love are bleh now.

Good for you to give it a go and not have eaten the whole thing!! Remember when.....I really miss pizza. Has anybody tried making one with the cauliflower crust?

It’s on my list of things to try. But for now I have a bread maker and it’s easy to just throw the ingredients for the dough in and then it to the correct setting. Then I pull it out, split it into 2 dough balls and let them rise for another hour or so, next time I’ll double that. And then because my career is in the pizza industry I happen to be fantastic at tossing pizza up in the air and spinning it—so I impress the kids before I make a decent looking pizza. I’m still trying to get the perfect dough recipe though lol. I might just buy a cauliflower crust from Trader Joe’s next time lol. :)

I have not made one with cauliflower crust, but if you go on Pinterest and search fathead pizza dough, there's one that uses almond flour, cream cheese and shredded cheese - It was one of my go to's before WLS.

We don't like coconut flour so really try to use Almond flour alternatives.

Welcome! I totally empathize. I live in a big metroplex yet told only my husband and 1 very trusted friend. I’m a revision and did not want the scrutiny. Do tell us more about your situation and journey this far, I think from a timeline you may be ahead of most of us :)

Finally have a break from work being so crazy so popping in to see what's up. I've been trying to read through all the old posts. Good to see everyone doing so well, even with all the bumps, stalls, and whatnot that can occur.

I just passed my 6 week mark which allowed me to get back to full blown exercise. I went back to my boxing gym for the first time in 8 weeks and it felt amazing! I need to get my trainer to get a pic of me to share. I bought my hubby and I Apple Watches to Celebrate my new journey and it's amazing how much more engaged I am with activity than I was when I just had my fitbit. I've had two perfect weeks so far. :)

And because I am a gluten for punishment I've also been thinking about dusting off my T25 DVDs. I need more Shaun T in my life!!

Now that I'm on real food I find myself struggling to eat well rounded meals. I'm good on protein...I have Protein for days. But trying to also fit veggies in has been hard. I'm still averaging about 3oz total of food per meal so it's finding that balance of having the right amount of protein at each meal so I hit my goals, but also not so much protein that I can't also have a measly green bean. lol I actually have a follow up with my nutritionist today so I'll be asking her for some pointers.

So, what's up with everyone else?

I'm glad to see you doing well! I have been doing some exercise but not nearly what I know I need to do. I guess some is better than none.

I hit my weight loss low this morning! I'm down 37 lbs since my start weight and 30 since surgery.

I totally understand the well rounded meals thing. I am getting in my protein and trying to fit in veggies and a strawberry every once in a while. My surgeon actually told me that she is fine with me eating pretty much nothing but protein as long as I'm taking my Vitamins. She said that as I get closer to my goal weight and increase calories, then it will be easier (and expected) to move to a more balanced diet.

Awesome weight loss!

I love that you singled out strawberries. I'm going to do that too. My favorite fruit is raspberries so I could probably fit a few in over the course of a day! I am so seriously missing salad though. I can't wait until I can dig into a giant bowl of hard veggies. I had the teeniest tiniest salad the other night to test how my stomach would do with lettuce. I chopped it up into tiny bits and it was so good. Just need to experiment with other veggies too.

I did make a bolognese sauce the other night which was nice since it has hidden veggies in it and that went down perfectly.

I had salad yesterday and hate to disappoint, I can tell you I had probably (in eye ball measurement) 2 Tbsp, which took about 6-8 forkfuls for me to consume. I was stuffed.

I have a TON of fruits and veggies daily at 5 weeks out. My secret? Green smoothie for breakfast! A ton of baby Kake and Spinich daily! Blueberries galore, fresh papaya, strawberries etc etc. check out my pictures a few posts back! Like this morning my 40g Protein Shake had kale spinich, unsweetened Soy milk, genpro powder, kiwi, pineapple, mango, my 1a day bari vitamine, and probiotic! All 16oz of this deliciousness went down smoothly! And my Constipation and tiredness issues... gone! I’m full of energy ready to take on the world!

I saw that, but my desire is to actually eat them vs just getting them in by way of a smoothie. You know? I want to see it on my plate, enjoy it with my eyes, feel the texture in my mouth, etc. lol I want to chew!

I take some spinach in a tiny ramekin and slice a strawberry on top, add a teaspoon of blue cheese, and top with a teaspoon of goddess dressing. It is sooo good.

Oh, another dish I did that was veggie based is puttanesca with chicken sausage and instead of Pasta, I made zoodles. I am liking my zoodle maker!

ooh I do love spinach and strawberries! I like to add feta to mine. I haven't thought about that in awhile, thanks for the reminder!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
