Hi all.

So when I sleep I toss between my back and side. I’m 2 days out and it really hurts to both toss and then if I can get on my side the pulling aches like crazy.

I’m thinking about just sleeping in my lazy boy but really want to be in bed.

Ideas?

I just had to push through it. I was sleeping on my side by day 4-5... even though it was a bit sore I did it anywhere because Surgeon never said not to.

I was in the same boat. I propped myself up some which helped keep me not tossing and turning. It kinda helped but every now and then I’d feel a tweak.

I was sleeved on Monday (5/21) I am also a side sleeper but that has been impossible. I have been sleeping on the recliner. It’s easier to get in and out of. Best of luck to you.

I'm a side/stomach sleeper. The first 4 or 5 days I slept with a bunch of pillows stacked against the wall by my bed so I could sleep up right. I slowly transitioned to my side. By maybe day 8 or 9 I had no pain laying on my side and by 2 weeks i was sleeping on my stomach again.

That's not a bad idea overall, if you can't find a position to lay in without issue. I missed the hospital bed the first few nights for this very reason. It does get better!

I'm a side sleeper as well. I found a pillow wedged halfway under my side, halfway hugging it took the pressure off my incisions and I was able to sleep.

I am a left side sleeper & belly sleeper; I am unable to sleep in either positing. I can only lay on my right side for about 2 hours.

I have resorted to sleeping on my couch which gives me support at my back while laying on my right side and I sleep more comfortably on my back on the couch versus the bed. Sometimes I will start sleeping in my bed and then transition to couch in middle of the night

I'm a side sleeper, too. I don't toss/turn much, but I sleep best on my side.

After surgery, I was unable to sleep on my side for about 2 weeks. And not for lack of trying either. I didn't have pain, per se. It sort of felt like my guts were shifting. It was uncomfortable and had me worried, so I couldn't sleep. During those 2 weeks, I slept propped up with pillows. I didn't like it and I didn't sleep well, but it passed.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
