Surgery Scheduled! Revision Sleeve to Bypass

Recommended Posts

I am having my sleeve converted to bypass on June 26, due to damage from GERD. I had the sleeve in February of 2014, and did really well. I am bummed about another surgery, but I am hopeful that I will feel better and not do any further damage.

@Kimber628I just had my revision to bypass because of awful GERD as well. One week ago tomorrow..... surgeon has cleared me for "mushies" already, today was my first time in 5 months to be able to "eat" something that wasn't a full liquid without severe pain caused by GERD (and hiatal hernia).

Looking forward to my life again. Sounds dramatic, but pretty true.

I hope you get awesome results/relief from the GERD probs as well. :)

Had my revision on May 30th to gastric bypass and couldn't be happier!!!!!!! I suggest everyone who feels the way I did to go back to the doctors, they are there to help. Screw people who shame you into thinking it was YOUR fault. I waited nearly 2 YEARS because I blamed myself for my sleeve failure. LOW AND BEHOLD, it was SURGEON ERROR! You hope and pray that you are not the 1% of this group, but sometimes you are, and it is okay. Down from 250 to 233, and couldn't be happier! Seeing the number on the scale decrease again is amazing. Not only that, my face is slimmer and its also those non-scale victories that have me so happy!

Miss smiles,

I’m so happy to see your post. I’m being revised from sleeve to bypass on July 10th and lately have been second guessing if I should do it since I “failed “ at the sleeve too. I always felt my restriction wasn’t was what it was supposed to be. I can’t wait now to have the bypass. Thanks for the update!

You went through this journey once, and it didn't work out - but its not the end. I feel like I have been given a second chance, so you can totally do this! Even my dad said he couldn't believe I went through the surgery again, and I told him I wasn't a quitter! I will try, and try again until i reach a goal weight, and am finally happy with myself. I am sure you feel the same!

Lately I have been thinking that this will never really be over for me. I have been reading about people who had bypass surgery many years ago and needed a "tune-up" or an over-stitch, which is apparently pretty simple and done on an out-patient basis. Personally, I would rather submit to some kind of surgery every ten years or so than further damage my body with out-of-control weight gain. At age 48, I am finally done beating myself up over this. I truly believe that if intelligence, my best effort and a powerful desire to do be healthy were enough, I would be at my goal weight without surgery right now.
Best wishes to you all who are trying so hard to get this very heavy monkey off your back! :220_monkey_face:

Hi All, I had gastric sleeve in 2011 and kept off about a 100 pound. On June 13 I had a revision to gastric bypass. I am down roughly about 35 pounds since the bypass. But I seem to hit a lot of walls my weight either stays the same or goes up or down 1 pound . I am getting my Proteins and Water intake. I do walk every other day. I am eating about 1300 calories a day all good healthy stuff. I just cant figure out why I am not losing much weight. Anyone have this issue??

Hi all, I had my sleeve done in 2014, lost 7.5 stone and gained 2-3 stone's back. I have been advised to have the bypass due to severe acid reflux. So I'm thinking of having a revision so I welcome this postand your thoughts. I don't see to much stuff on the successes of having a revision. I'm told by surgeon my weight lost will be slow due to the fact that must of my excess weight 75% had been lost when I had the sleeve, so my starting position is different, he says I'm likely to lose the weight I've regained maybe a little more not that much around 45-50Ibs which is ok by me. I'm interest to find out how much people have lost in 6 -12 months of having a revision from sleeve to bypass.

I’m a Sleeve to bypass but I regained it all due to a malformed sleeve to begin with. Yes info is so hard to come by. I e been combing the net trying to find good studies. What I have read does suggest you get one shot at fooling your body. But that’s just one study. and I don’t know if it’s different when you vrs try to continue looking. Keep me posted if you find anything. I go in aug 22nd!

If you’re not losing weight than you’re eating too much. 1300 calories is more appropriate for maintenance mode, not weight loss mode. I recommend you eat dense Protein first, followed by non-starchy vegetables. And weigh all of your food and log everything that goes in your mouth with an app like MyFitnessPal. And try reducing your calories to 800-1000 per day to see if that gets you closer to your goal. Good luck!

I'm not exactly the opinion you requested because I went from the band to the RNY. At the time, 10 years ago, the band had a decent amount of fanfare (Can you say 1-800-lap-band)? The Sleeve was just coming out and my insurance wouldn't cover it. To be honest, I wanted the sleeve, but wasn't willing to pay out of pocket. I didn't want something as extreme as the RNY.

I went from 293 to about 220, then up to 303. It never felt right, and the port flipped 90 degrees within a year or two. I choked all the time, and many times some extremely painful swallowing deals.

To answer your question about GERD, I can tell you this. I've had a problem for as long as I can remember it...Way before the lapband. When I wake up in the morning, I sound like a beat-up pickup truck. I have to clear my throat several times, drink Water, and even have to clear my throat several times a day. It was so bad my coworkers could tell when I hadn't "drank it out" because my voice would be raspy and out of pitch by a lot.

Before I had the lap band, I had GERD really bad. After the lap band, the symptoms went away immediately.

I talked to my RNY surgeon about the constant clearing of throat, and he said it might be silent gerd, and the surgery might fix it. I'm 6 weeks out today. Every morning when I wake up, my voice works perfect. No pitchiness, no clearing throat, nothing. It came as a great benefit to me. My surgeon does have me on prilosec for 6 months, he said it actually helps the pouch heal.

I did a lot of research and intense thinking about my revision. When I went to the required classes, I would say 60-70% of the people were going with the sleeve. The doc "kind of" recommended the sleeve saying the take rate was very high. The (very) long term results just aren't there compared to the RNY. The 10 year results show that the greatest retained loss is from the RNY. At the end of the day, that's the whole goal of the surgery, so that's what I went with.

Very Insightful! So glad this is working for you. 1 day more till my Sleeve to RNY on Wednesday. Nerves are kicking in...

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
