November Exercise Challenge!

Recommended Posts

Sounds like you are off to a good start with the trainer Nana!

I am doing well with the cardio portion of my workout, but I must start in earnest with the weight training. My problem is that I had an awesome trainer in the States (a Golden Gloves Boxing champion), and nobody else can measure up to him.

When you are trained by a boxer, that is one tough workout!!!! They have no mercy or sympathy, as you might imagine.

I have tried other trainers, but they just don't work me hard enough. Also, I prefer to work with free weights and the vast majority of trainers prefer to work with machines. I therefore think the time has come for me to go it alone, hence my current lack of motivation...................

My former trainer is still a dear friend and I was just discussing this with him the other night. One reassurance he gave me was that my current cardio regime is good. That said, no more excuses -- the time has come to start working with the weights again.

I need to add strength and flexibility training to my routine too. I'm reluctant to join a gym again because I've never stuck with it before and I hate to waste the money. I am wondering if the money might be better spent on some kind of home equipment. Anyway, I'm trying to figure out what is going to work for me long term. In the short term, I've signed up for a physical conditioning class at a local college. It will start in January and go through May. Its very inexpensive (less than $100) and I'll have access to the campus facility and learn how to use the free weights and the equipment. I'm hoping it will help me figure out what works best for me.

I did get in a short walk today. I just took a break from all the cooking and went for a walk. That is so unlike the old me and I really like the change.

Well I didn't have any formal exercise yesterday, but 3 hours of packing a truck and then 4 hours of unpacking the truck and hauling a crap load of HEAVY stuff up a flight of stairs is going to count for my last day of exercise to meet the challenge. I am going to go join the gym tomorrow so I wil get in a few more days. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. We spent our day finishing the unloading of the truck and unpacking boxes. We are going to go and share an entree at one of the open restaurants.

Good morning all!

Let's see where do I start...as everyone is doing SO amazingly well!!!

Becky, your absolute dedication to your workouts is highly inspirational!!!!

Karri, I cannot believe that in the midst of an already physically challenging move, you took time out to get a workout in. That is WAY above and beyond -- Good for you!!!

Dave, 80 pounds -- WOW!!!! Congratulations!!!!

I (and the scales) are still recovering from my Thanksgiving Day "carbo-rama," but the workouts are helping

Have a great Saturday everyone!

Becky, that sounds like an excellent plan. I might've looked into that, too, if I would have tho't of it!! LOL

But seriously, I'm pretty determined to make this work at the gym. Like I say at least twice a day, the band won't keep me from falling off the wagon, it'll just keep the wagon from going off and leaving me behind!!

So, whereas before, every other time I've joined a gym, I've fallen off the wagon and given up -- this one has so much more to offer, if I have a problem with one thing -- like say my back messes up like it did when I belonged to Curves a few years ago, I can switch to the Water aerobics. Etc.

The point is to not just give up and sit on my butt again!

Progress is like riding a bike, if you aren't moving forward, you're falling over!

Frangipani - It was very difficult to actually go and join the gym (and fork over the money) but I felt very good afterwards. Today...a different story. I am very very sore, so I am taking today and tomorrow to rest. It has been a very physical last few days so I think I deserve it. Starting Monday though, no excuses.

Everyone else is doing great on getting exercise during the holidays.

Sounds like everyone is realy digging in and working hard. Frangi, I second everything you said. This is an impressive group. Dave, you are already almost half way to your goal and Salsa is already in onederland!! Nana, you have already exceeded your exercise goal for the month. I like this thread because it is so up beat and positive. I love to see us all having success. And yes Salsa, you deserve a day off to rest your muscles.

Today was an example of needing an alternative to my outdoor walking. It was cold and raining, so I bundled up, carried an umbrella, and managed to get in a 30 minute

walk. Jody, I wish I enjoyed the cold as much as you. Do any of you have a treadmill or any kind of equipment at home? What about those indoor walking in place videos? Has anyone tried those? Its going to be cold and rainy here again tomorrow, but I can't miss one more day if I'm going to make this month's challenge. I guess I'll be out there with my umbrella again tomorrow!

That is some dedication Becky! I don't walk in the cold and it was down to 15 degrees this morning, so that is why I had to stop walking outside and why I needed to join the gym. A treadmill is a good choice. I had one but had to sell it when we decided to move into an upstairs apartment. I got mine at Wal-Mart for 350$ earlier this summer and it was a pretty good one. My muscles really did need a rest. I sneezed tonight and my ab muscles felt screamed at me.

Good Morning All!

Well, I certainly had an eventful workout this morning......I got asked out on a date.

About halfway through my workout this morning as I was walking (and sweating copiously and panting), a very pleasant, thirty-something, man waved at me and said good morning as I walked past.

A few minutes later he caught up with me on the road and started a conversation. I live in a very social place and meet new people all of the time. I therefore thought nothing of it and stopped to chat. About 20 minutes into the conversation he asked me if I would like to join him for dinner this evening.

At that point you really could have knocked me over with a feather (although hopefully I didn't show it). It never even occurred to me that he might be "interested." After battling this weight problem for so long now, that sort of thing isn't even a part of my mind set.

I don't wear jewelry when I work out and wasn't wearing my wedding ring, so I explained to him that I am married.

A few minutes later we ended the conversation with him playing Sean Kingston's, "Beautiful Girls" on his iPhone for me -- because, he said, "You are a beautiful woman."

How's that for a major ego boost on a Sunday morning?????

Frangipani, Well you did have an exciting workout this morning! I would have fainted if it happened to me. I had an encounter with a man on my walk today too. I walk at the same park as my primary care physician. We passed on the trail and he gave me a thumbs up! ha, ha. Not nearly as flattering as your little dinner invitation.

Jody, glad you're back posting again today. A whole hour! That's great. Keep up the good work. Tell me about the Leslie Sansome DVD's. Have you used them before? What do you think? Do they get boring?

I think I'd use and enjoy a treadmill, but again, I don't have a good history of sticking with that sort of thing and I don't want to waste more money. I've had various pieces of equipment in the past that all ended up just collecting dust. I feel like I've got to prove (to myself) that I'm really making a life long commitment to exercise before I spend anymore on equipment or memberships. Maybe I should set some kind of exercise goal and when I reach it reward myself with a good treadmill. Just rambling now.

Anyway, I managed to walk when it wasn't raining today and got in 40 minutes. Just five more days left this month.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

Good Luck this procedure is well worth it I am down to 249.6 lb please continue with the process..

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
